When Richard Wagner in 1839 came on the ship to England in several sea storms, the fear coined him before the raging sea deeply. Supposedly he heard this from the sailors and the legend of the Flying Dutchman. Completely inspirational then worked Heinrich Heine processing this legend in his memoirs of Schnabelewopski,. In Paris Wagner created the design of an opera on the subject and presented it with three final numbers at the Opéra one - although the idea appealed, but the contract was awarded to another. At least the draft Wagner brought some money to further survival and for the purchase of a piano, on which he then wrote his own version. Mid-November 1841 was his first version, which plays off the coast of Scotland, finished. The elevators go seamlessly into one another, as Wagner wanted the opera without a break, almost like an incessant violent storm should be listed. The Flying Dutchman is Wagner's fourth opera, with her he closes clear to the romantic opera, which was marked by Spohr, Weber and Marschner, at.

The Flying Dutchman has as punishment for arrogance towards God - on for all time with his ship - he vowed not desist, to circumnavigate the Cape of Good Hope, despite terrible weather
wander the ocean. He may ashore every seven years. He finds a woman who remains faithful to him, he could be redeemed. So far that is not managed. When the next landfall imminent, the Dutchman meets the
Businessman Donald. This promises him a sum of money to his daughter Senta as a wife. Amazingly, Senta has always been in love with the Dutch, because the house hangs a portrait of the Dutchman that she has adored since childhood. Your admirers, the hunter Georg, was always jealous of the image. In this respect, initiated by Donald pair merging operates on well: Senta is happy to be the man of her dreams betrothed. Georg but is angry. When the Dutchman a dispute between Senta and Georg partly overheard, he believes also Senta has become unfaithful to him and sailed off. But Senta proves their loyalty,
by the absegelnden ship afterwards plunges into the sea.
