High Schools Participate In 2nd Annual Northwest Indiana High School Improv Invitational

Improv comedy - it has helped spawn the careers of comedy titans Chris Farley, Steve Carrell, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, and countless others. The comedic skills people learned there have spread around the world and spawned off thousands of improv theatre & sketch groups, TV shows, and Youtube clips. Now those talents are being put to use to continue putting Northwest Indiana on the improv map in a special one-day event. The Stray Dogs Improv of Crown Point High School & Improductions, LLC present the second Northwest Indiana High School Improv Invitational on April 6th at Crown Point High School at 6 PM.

"This is fantastic," says co-producer Nelson Velazquez of Improductions LLC, a theatre/production company located in Crown Point, IN created to promote, support, and produce local improv comedy in the area. "We're back for another year and this time at Crown Point High School. We've been working hard over the last year to bring improv to The Region through local classes and showcases so we could build a local scene that would be a great platform for people to hone their skills to later jump to the bigger scenes elsewhere and be competitive. With this invitational, we want to bring the improv teams at the high school level together to not only celebrate what they have accomplished thus far but also provide opportunities for them to grow artistically." Invitational co-producer and director of the Stray Dogs Don Bernacky adds, "The High School Invitational is quite literally the next generation of comedy writers, producers, actors, and comedians. People should really come out and see the cleverest young minds in Northwest Indiana before they hit it big in the future."

Five Northwest Indiana area high school improv teams will be anchoring the day-long event. Teams from Crown Point High School, Highland High School, Munster High School, Valparaiso High School, and Hanover Central High School will be in attendance and will be treated to a number of improv workshops led by professional improv instructors from the Chicagoland area during the afternoon followed up by a performance showcase that evening. The show will feature not only all the student teams in attendance but also professional ensembles from the NWI area closing out the night.
