A children’s book sparks a lively confrontation in 1959 Montgomery in this Midwest première by Kenneth Jones. Inspired by true events, "Alabama Story" centers on Emily Wheelock Reed, a fearless no-nonsense librarian who refuses to remove a children’s book from the state library, despite a campaign spearheaded by the disarming but vocal segregationist Senator E.W. Higgins. As they move quietly and with humor toward their inevitable confrontation, a parallel story of childhood friends, Joshua and Lily, a black man and white woman, reflects the personal and political tensions alive in Montgomery. 2014 Finalist for the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s National Playwrights Conference.
