Hembras de Pluma is a collective of women artists who have come together to present our personal stories of childhood, growing older, loss, love, grief, and joy. As comadres, we would often sit around the table and share stories with one another, laughing and crying, dreaming and remembering. In the summer of 2013, we decided to write and perform these stories as a way to honor our histories, our ancestors, our families, and ourselves.
We present nine original stories in the form of monologues, poetry, and short plays. We call our collective Hembras de Pluma. Feathered women. Women wielding the pen. Hembra is woman, feminine, rooted. Pluma is pen or feather. When we work in a collective spirit with the intention of lifting each other up, we all benefit. We lift our voices to the sky and take flight.
Hembras de Pluma is presented as part of Women & Creativity 2014 by Las Meganenas and the National Hispanic Cultural Center.
