Surprises have become unsurprising! Our tumultuous times disorient us and division has jaded us. But Jewish values have a special power to anchor, guide and uplift, as a new theatre production demonstrates in What a Surprise! This show will be performed in person in California and live on Zoom May 7-June 11. It is a creation of The Braid, the go-to Jewish story company.

What becomes of the Jewish soul caught between the American Dream and the Promised Land? America is a place of new opportunities, but for immigrants from Israel and their families, the story is more complicated … and a rich source of dramatic potential.

The films include THE DYBBUK; TEVYA (starring Maurice Schwartz, based on the Sholem Aleichem stories which inspired the legendary musical FIDDLER ON THE ROOF); AMERICAN MATCHMAKER; HER SECOND MOTHER; MIR KUMEN ON; OVERTURE TO GLORY; ELI ELI; JEWISH KING LEAR; MOTEL, THE OPERATOR; and THREE DAUGHTERS.

Kino Lorber's long-awaited Blu-ray of THE JEWISH SOUL: CLASSICS OF YIDDISH CINEMA is set for release next Tuesday, November 24th. With new translations by noted Yiddish cultural historian, actor (the Coen Brothers' A SERIOUS MAN, 'Boardwalk Empire'), playwright, and translator Allen Lewis Rickman.

Following the break-out success of Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish, nominated for four Lucille Lortel Awards, The National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene (NYTF) will present a dramatic reading of H. Leivick's 1921 retelling of The Golem, the classic story of the Golem of Prague, which delves in the world of mysticism as a mediation on the effect of violence on the Jewish soul. It will be performed on Tuesday, May 7 at 7:30 pm at the Museum of Jewish Heritage A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, Edmond J. Safra Plaza, 36 Battery Place, NYC. Tickets are free at www.nytf.org.

The National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene (NYTF) offers a unique opportunity to experience the festival of Purim in truly theatrical style, during its Purim Simkheon Wednesday, March 20 at 7 pm, presented at the Museum of Jewish Heritage - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, Edmond J. Safra Plaza, 36 Battery Place, NYC. The audience is invited to come in costume and bring their graggers!

Following the break-out success of the Yiddish production Fiddler on the Roof and the world premiere of the jazz opera Dear Erich, the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene (NYTF) continues this season's presentations with a concert exploring Yiddish theatre's golden age with From the Yiddish Rialto to the Silver Screen on Sunday, March 10 at 2 pm., performed Off Broadway at the Museum of Jewish Heritage - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, Edmond J. Safra Plaza, 36 Battery Place, NYC. This event is part of Carnegie Hall's Migrations: The Making of America festival.

On the heels of its spectacular, sold-out run of the Yiddish language presentation of Fiddler on The Roof, National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene (NYTF) has announced the upcoming Winter-Spring 2019 season, which will include the civil-rights era inspired concert Soul to Soul, restored gems from the golden age of the Yiddish theater in From the Yiddish Rialto to the Silver Screen and the world premiere of the jazz opera Dear Erich, being presented with the New York City Opera.

The Azrieli Foundation is proud to announce that composer Avner Dorman is the winner of the 2018 Azrieli Prize for Jewish Music for his composition, Nigunim for Violin and Orchestra. The $50,000 cash prize is granted biennially to a composer who has written the best new major work of Jewish Music, and is accompanied by a world premiere gala performance and a professional recording of the prize-winning work.
