Celebrating the baroque icon, the 4th Toronto Bach Festival presents three days of rare and well-known vocal and keyboard music, and works for other instruments and small orchestra. Featuring harpsichordist Luc Beauséjour, countertenor Daniel Taylor et al., a Brandenburg concerto, Late Night with Bach over beer, a free lecture and more.

May 24, 8 p.m. - Toronto Bach Festival opening concert: Brandenburg Five - Montreal harpsichordist Luc Beauséjour makes his Festival debut, joined by Julia Wedman on violin, Alison Melville on recorder and Director John Abberger (oboe) for an intimate performance of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 as well as two cantatas the early Tritt auf die Glaubensbahn (1714), and the later Du wahrer Gott und Davids Sohn) and Concerto in A minor for violin. Also featuring vocalists Hlne Brunet, Daniel Taylor, Nick Veltmeyer and Joel Allison, as well as the Toronto Bach Festival Orchestra.

May 25, 3:30 p.m. - Toronto Bach Festival: Bach and the French Style (Lecture)Music historian Dr. Ellen Exner (New England Conservatory of Music) shares her knowledge, insight and humour while revealing how Bachs approach to writing music was shaped by his exposure to the French Style as a young musician. Exners current book project re-examines the roots of Mendelssohns famous 1829 Berlin performance of Bachs St. Matthew Passion and the mythology that surrounds it.

May 25, 5 p.m. - Toronto Bach Festival: Bach & the French Style - Montreal harpsichordist and recording artist Luc Beauséjour draws from some of J.S. Bach's most inventive music for solo keyboard, to perform French and English suites. Strongly influenced by Bach's study of French masters, this concert reflects both the composer's performing virtuosity and divinely inspired melodies.

May 25, 9 p.m. - Toronto Bach Festival: Late Night With Bach - N.B. NOTE LOCATION: The Black Swan, 154 Danforth Avenue - Montreal baroque cellist Elinor Frey presents solo works on the five-string cello, including Bach's Suite No. 6 in D major, and two works recently written for her by Canadian composers Scott Edward Godin (Guided by Voices, the title track on her new Analekta CD) and Isaiah Ceccarelli (With Concord of Sweet Sounds). (Drinks not included in admission price.)

May 26, 3 p.m. - Toronto Bach Festival closing concert: Lutheran Masses (at St. Barnabas-on-the-Danforth)The Festival concludes with two of the shorter Lutheran masses Bach wrote before undertaking his masterpiece, the Mass in B minor. For this concert, John Abberger directs the Toronto Bach Festival Orchestra and Singers, including Hélène Brunet, Daniel Taylor, Lawrence Wiliford, and Joel Allison. Enjoy Bach's glorious Mass in G major, the Mass in F major with its brilliant horn parts, and his seldom-heard Sanctus in D major.

Ages: 13 up (younger if used to sitting through concerts)
