Pacific Opera Victoria announces a casting change for the first production of the 2018-19 opera season, Beethoven's Fidelio.

Canadian soprano Aviva Fortunata will sing the lead role of Leonore, in what will be her POV debut.

Ms. Fortunata is a graduate of the Canadian Opera Company's Ensemble Studio and has performed leading roles for the Canadian Opera Company and for Saskatoon Opera. She received critical acclaim for her performance as Norma when she stepped in for a colleague in Dallas Opera's 2017 production of Bellini's masterpiece.

Other notable credits include Desdemona in Otello and the Lady with a Cake Box in Postcard from Morocco with San Francisco Opera's Merola Opera Program; Donna Anna in Don Giovanni with Concert Opera Group, Centre for Opera Studies in Italy and the University of Toronto; and Poulenc's Gloria with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

Directed by Wim Trompert and conducted by Timothy Vernon, Fidelio runs October 11-21, 2018 at the Royal Theatre, Victoria, BC, Canada.
