The Jewish Museum Will Feature THE WIND UP: THE POWER OF PICTURES on 11/19

The Jewish Museum presents The Wind Up: The Power of Pictures, the next in its popular series of after-hours events, on Thursday, November 19 from 8pm to 11pm. Featuring live music, a photo booth, and an open bar with beer, wine, and vodka, The Wind Up is inspired by The Power of Pictures: Early Soviet Photography, Early Soviet Film, which explores how early modernist photography influenced a new Soviet style while energizing and expanding the nature of the medium.  The evening includes a performance by the raucous dance band Romashka, fronted by Lithuanian-born singer Inna Barmash, and a set by DJ Spinach, known for his unique mixture of world music sounds.  There will also be special exhibition tours of The Power of Pictures at 8:30pm and 9:30pm.

The kids indie rock band Josh & The Jamtones will perform at the Jewish Museum on Sunday, December 7 at 11:30 am. Fronted by singer/songwriter Josh Shriber and drummer/producer Patrick Hanlin, their interactive concerts get crowds of any age moving their bodies and singing along. Josh seamlessly blends roots/reggae/ska stylings, feel-good pop, folk punk, country ballads, New Orleans-style street music and kid-friendly improv comedy. The program features the company premiere of Jir?i? Kylia?n's comic and delightful Sechs Ta?nze (Six Dances), along with revivals of his playful and sexy work Petite Mort, William Forsythe's explosive In the middle, somewhat elevated and George Balanchine's complex and inventive The Four Temperaments. Houston Ballet will give six performances of the program in the Brown Theater at Wortham Theater Center.

Artist Barbara Bloom has devoted her career to questioning the ways we perceive and value objects. With a light touch and subtle wit, she divines the meanings encoded in the things with which we surround ourselves. The Jewish Museum invited Bloom to create an installation drawn from its 25,000 works of ceremonial, decorative, and fine art. Her presentation sets a selection of over 270 pieces in unconventional contexts, and offers visitors new ways to view the Museum and its holdings. As it were ... So to speak: A Museum Collection in Dialogue with Barbara Bloom will be on view through August 4, 2013.
