San Francisco's African-American Shakespeare Company Announces 2023-24 Season

The 29th season of San Francisco's African-American Shakespeare Company will see its Artistic Director L. Peter Callender taking on two of what he terms “bucket list roles.” First as Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman in October, followed by Shylock in the Merchant of Venice in May.

The Marsh Berkeley to Present Fred Pitts in AREN'T YOU…? Beginning Next Month

The Marsh Berkeley will present Fred Pitts' lauded solo work Aren't You…? which recounts his hilarious journey to visit all 21 California Mission churches, where he discovers that being black makes him an instant celebrity – the question is which one? The piece follows Pitts on a summer-long tour to one Mission after the next, encountering docents and fellow tourists. 

TheatreWorks Announces 52nd Season Including Two World Premieres

TheatreWorks Silicon Valley announced its 52nd season, featuring six plays and musicals to be presented November 2022 through August 2023. Three of the season's productions will be mounted at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, and three will be staged at Palo Alto's Lucie Stern Theatre. The African-American Shakespeare company is elated to announce what Artistic Director L Peter Callender is a calling a season of “splendor and renewal” featuring 4 productions, live-and-in-person: The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged); Cinderella; The Glass Menagerie; and Richard II. There will also be a special streaming-only edition of Twelfth Night.

The African-American Shakespeare Company will present Noël Coward's classic Private Lives, directed by Clay David for six performances only this April. This draws their 2019/20 season to a close, a season that has seen the company mount a much-praised Othello, their annual holiday Cinderella, and the dramatic satire The Trial of One Short-Sighted Black Woman vs. Mammy Louise and Safreeta Mae.
