Signature Theatre’s revival of the groovy Vietnam-era musical HAIR is wildly energetic, colorful, and full of spirit. The cast’s gorgeous voices and exuberance uplift songs that we know as the soundtrack of the times, from the opening “Aquarius” to the final “Let the Sunshine In.”

“Unforgettable” is the only way for this reviewer to describe the sold-out one night performance of The Music Of Nat King Cole on April 25, 2024 at Dizzy’s Club (Jazz At Lincoln Center). The performance showcased a smattering of Cole’s vast repertoire of songs that we all know and love.

I had a unique opportunity last weekend to experience a completely student-run production of a show that has intrigued me since I first heard of it. Alice by Heart is a musical with music by Duncan Sheik and lyrics and book by Steven Sater (with Jessie Nelson), the duo responsible for Spring Awakening. Neely Hebert, who was interviewed by BroadwayWorld about this production earlier this month, produced and directed Alice by Heart as a labor of love for her contemporaries and the local theatre community before she leaves for college this summer.

Rupert’s Remarkable Request” is an awarding winning original play written by York local playwright Diane Crews. It is onstage at TAFE: Theatre Arts for Everyone from April 26th to 28th under the directions of Diane Crews. Rupert is a well-known character at TAFE, and he appears in “Rupert Meets Mrs. Tales,” which is one of the 4 touring shows the theatre offers the community. “Rupert’s Remarkable Request” is a unique show geared towards families and young readers. Rupert’s enthusiasm meeting new characters might encourage the love of reading for your family.

In 2022 BARRACKING FOR THE UMPIRE graced the stage, presenting a new perspective on Aussie rules football. Returning in 2024, the world may not have changed much, but with two AFL premiership players forced into early retirement this year by concussion issues, the play puts forth a poignant voice of reason against the passion from the crowd.

In a world where quiet facts are repeatedly drowned out by loud opinions and with calamity around every corner, do we rock paper scissors for not just the right to be heard, but the right to survive?

This production is full of physical comedy and solid acting. In addition to singing beautifully, this cast has embraced the theatricality of the art form, and the result is a heck of a lot of fun.

BONNIE AND CLYDE, which is playing at The Royal Theatre, 111 S Market St, in Benton, through this Sunday, April 28, was my most anticipated show that I’ve wanted to see for a few years now.

The B Street Theatre has been riding a wave of hit after hit, continuing with Aurora Real de Asua’s surfing comedy, Wipeout. Set in one of my favorite locales, Santa Cruz, Wipeout explores the friendship between three unique women. Rolling surfboards, a hunky instructor, and the bluntness that comes with age make this an engaging, relatable, and completely hilarious take on how our relationships –with ourselves and others – change in each season of life.

Stuart Ross’ 1989 jukebox homage to boy bands of the 1950’s is a pleasant whiff of nostalgia sure to remove you from the stress of today’s less naïve and chaotic present. Forever Plaid follows The Plaids, a youthful quartet with stardom in their eyes killed in a car accident in 1964. Like the baseball players in Field of Dreams, they return to perform one final concert and we’re here to bear witness.

What is theatre fundamentally about? Why do we create any form of literature or performance? Why do we tell stories? Stories are such a formative part of life, forging our knowledge of the world and helping to bring communities together.

A brand-new, reimagined regional iteration of the Tony-winning 2005 musical JERSEY BOYS now at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts is exceeding all expectations.
