Asian American Theater Conference and Festival to be Held in LA, 6/16-26

For the first time, the National Asian American Theater Conference and the National Asian American Theater Festival will be held jointly from June 16-25, 2011. The event will be presented in Los Angeles by the Consortium of Asian American Theaters and Artists (CAATA) and hosted by Asian American Theaters East West Players and Teada Productions, both residing in Los Angeles.

After a completely sold-out run at the Brick Theatre's Fight Fest, and subsequent sold-out extension, Last Life returns for two-weeks only at the Ohio Theatre (66 Wooster Street located between Spring and Broome) beginning March 4th and ending the 14th running Thursdays - Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 7 pm.

Born in Illinois from Taiwanese and East Timorese parents, Jen Shyu is a vocalist, composer, improviser, multi-instrumentalist (piano, moon lute, er hu, and violin), and dancer. She is currently a core member of saxophonist Steve Coleman's Five Elements. As a soloist and bandleader now based in New York City, Shyu has focused on expanding the possibilities of voice and dance in the improvisational, experimental jazz, and creative music worlds. She also continues a dying Taiwanese folk tradition on the 2-stringed Taiwanese moon guitar, recently named the first 'Ambassador of Hengchun Folk Music' by Hengchun's mayor.
