City Theater Company gets their Irish up for the 21st season, opening in December with a reimagined staging of James Joyce's The Dead. Richard Nelson won the Tony Award for Best Musical Book in 2000 for his adaptation of the short story that closes out Joyce's seminal collection The Dubliners. The music is by Shaun Davey, with lyrics conceived and adapted by Richard Nelson and Shaun Davey.

City Theater Company's landmark 2013-2014 season continues with the epic Gypsy. Hailed by critics as the great American musical-with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and book by Arthur Laurents-the show is based on the memoirs of legendary stripper Gypsy Rose Lee. The classically structured play focuses on the ultimate stage mom, Mama Rose, and her obsessive drive to make her two daughters into stars at any cost.

Plays & Players, Center City Philadelphia's longest continually operated theater at 1714 Delancey Place, will perform the East Coast Premiere of William Shakespeare's Land of the Dead, by John Heimbuch, running March 12-28 on its Mainstage. A true and accurate account of the 1599 zombie plague that spread to the Globe Playhouse, William Shakespeare's Land of the Dead mixes humorous horror conventions with meticulously researched characters and events from Shakespeare's life. With historical characters including Francis Bacon, Richard Burbage, and Queen Elizabeth joined together to battle zombies, Land of the Dead deftly crosses genres with a knowing wink.
