Opera Philadelphia Announces 2017-18 Season - Inaugural Festival O17, Three World Premieres, Two Philadelphia Premieres and More!

Opera Philadelphia's 2017-2018 Season opens with a twelve-day festival that transforms the city into a stage for the future of opera, as six venues come alive with the talents of dozens of spectacular artists in more than 25 performances. Hailed as "a bold move aimed at making Philadelphia a compelling stop on the opera-lover circuit" (The Philadelphia Inquirer) and "a significant expansion of Opera Philadelphia's seasonal offerings" (Opera News), the inaugural festival, O17, takes place from September 14-25, and promises opera lovers and newcomers a fresh way to experience the art form.

Utah Opera announced the addition of one of the most loved musical masterpieces, Mitch Leigh's “Man of La Mancha,” in January 2017, in replacement of Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer's “Moby-Dick,” which has been rescheduled to the 2017-18 season.

Arvada Center to Stage Regional Premiere of DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY, 4/26-5/15

The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities will open the regional premiere of Death Takes a Holiday directed by Arvada Center Artistic Producer, Rod A. Lansberry in the Main Stage Theatre on April 26, running through May 15, 2016. Performances are Tuesday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m.; Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m., Previews are April 22 - 24 at 7:30 p.m. nightly.  Moderated Talk Backs are scheduled on Friday, May 6 following the 7:30 p.m. performance and Wednesday, May 11 following the 1:00 p.m. performance. Following recent grand-scale stagings of Don Carlo and Nabucco it is again with Verdi that Opera Philadelphia makes its first appearance of the season at the Academy of Music, with the American premiere of a stylish new production of La traviata from award-winning Scottish director Paul Curran.  Highlighted by a black-tie Opening Night Gala (Today, Oct. 2), and a free HD broadcast in Independence National Historical Park to mark the company's fifth annual Opera on the Mall event (Saturday, Oct. 3), Opera Philadelphia's presentation showcases the company and role debuts of Metropolitan Opera favorite Lisette Oropesa as Violetta and Grammy Award-winner Alek Shrader as Alfredo, with Music Director Corrado Rovaris, whose “ownership of Verdi rivals any of the late greats” (Opera News), at the podium.
