METAs Recipients Announced for the 2019-20 season

The Montreal English Theatre Awards Committee is proud to announce the recipients of the 2019-20 METAs, Montreal English theatre's largest and most important peer-juried awards. The 8th Annual METAs Ceremony was held this Sunday evening, November 29th and was streamed virtually to both the METAs' YouTube page and Facebook page.

Today's subject Ted Sperling is very well represented this holiday season here in DC. He is the Musical Director/New Orchestrator for Fiddler on the Roof which plays through December 15th at the National Theatre. Beginning December 17th his work as Musical Supervisor can be heard on My Fair Lady at Kennedy Center. That show runs through Jan 19th.

A beloved theatrical classic from Tony-winner Joseph Stein and Pulitzer Prize-winners Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, Fiddler on the Roof is directed by Tony-Award winner Bartlett Sher (South Pacific, The King and I) and choreographed by the acclaimed Israeli choreographer Hofesh Shechter.

Theater J's 2019 Annual Benefit Performance is an unforgettable evening of musical theater at the newly renovated Edlavitch DCJCC on November 18 at 6:30 PM. The centerpiece of the event, which also includes food, drink, and socializing, is a special musical performance of After Anatevka: a Novel Based on a?oeFiddler on the Roofa?? written and performed by Grammy-nominated artist and author Alexandra Silber. Silber, who has appeared in Fiddler on the Roof on Broadway (directed by Bartlett Sher) and the West End, imagines what happens to Sholem Alecheim's beloved characters of Fiddler on the Roof after they step off stage. The performance features new songs composed by some of the top rising talent in musical theater today and sung by the gifted Silber, who recently played Sally Bowles in Cabaret at Olney Theatre Center.
Segal Centre Presents The North American Premiere Of MYTHIC

The Segal Centre is proud to continue its mission of developing and premiering new musical theatre works with top Canadian talent with a new pop/rock musical about the Greek goddess Persephone. Directed by Brian Hill and featuring a high-energy score filled with epic anthems by Marcus Stevens and Oran Eldor, the North American premiere of Mythic will be in the Sylvan Adams Theatre from October 27 to November 17, 2019.

Musicals inspired by the Greek myths are a dime a dozen, and Marcus Stevens' and Oran Eldor's MYTHIC is just another entry in that overpopulated canon. Despite the overzealous ebullience and mirth laced into every track on MYTHIC (Original London Cast Recording), the recording offers nothing more than bland pop schmaltz.
