July Events Announced at Blue Note Hawaii

The good times continue this month at Blue Note Hawaii with an eclectic lineup of local talent, national artists and side-splitting comedians. The Henry Kapono Artist to Artist Series continues with Malani Bilyeu of Kalapana, promising chicken-skin moments for all in attendance. Mike Lewis & Friends will share tributes to B.B. King, Etta James and contemporary soul singer Sade. Island Rhythm 98.5FM co-presents an unplugged pop-up show with Anuhea & Friends, followed by local greats Patrick Landeza & Kawika Kahiapo, a show with Duncan Kamakana & the Osorio 'Ohana, the Keauhou Band and of course the incomparable Willie K. The Blue Note Hawaii Comedy Series continues this month with Ahmed Ahmed and Rita Rudner, presented by Hawaii's Natural High. Donavon Frankenreiter is back by popular demand and new to the Blue Note are GRAMMY nominated jazz artists The Rippingtons. There won't be a dry eye in the house when an all-star lineup of local artists pay tribute to legendary jazz crooner Jimmy Borges.
Castillo Theatre to Screen LEGACY LEADERS OF COLOR Video Project

Castillo Theatre presents a special community screening in honor of New Federal Theatre Founder Woodie King Jr., as part of the Legacy Leaders of Color Video Project (LLCVP). The event will be held at the Castillo Theatre, 543 West 42nd Street in Manhattan, on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at 7pm with a panel discussion, film screening, audience Q&A, followed by a reception.

It may be a "tale as old as time", but the Warner Stage Company's season opener, Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, feels fresh, exciting and, as expected, magical. It is hard to find anyone who is not already familiar with the classic Disney tale of Belle, her unfortunate imprisonment in an enchanted castle, filled with staff and servants who have been turned into objects and the blossoming love with a beast who is more than he seems. On the Warner stage, these familiar scenes are all brought to life through beautiful sets, amazing costumes and, most importantly, a talented cast.
Actors' Equity Foundation Announces 2016 Roger Sturtevant Award Recipients

Jasmine Easler and Antonio LeRoy King have been chosen as the 2016 recipients of The Actors' Equity Foundation's Roger Sturtevant Award. The Roger Sturtevant Award is given annually to one male and one female Equity Membership Candidate (EMC) who have each demonstrated outstanding talent and skill in musical theatre. The recipients are chosen based on an application, recommendation letters, and a video audition that are then evaluated by a panel of Foundation members and CSA Casting Directors.
50th Anniversary Production of IN WHITE AMERICA to Play New Federal Theatre, 10/15-11/15

Woodie King Jr.'s New Federal Theatre, in association with Castillo Theatre, will revive Martin Duberman's 'In White America,' one of the signature plays of the Civil Rights Era, in a Off-Broadway production October 15 to November 15 at Castillo Theatre, 543 West 42nd Street. The famed documentary play traces the American quest for racial equality from the earliest days of the republic to the Little Rock crisis of 1957, with dialogue drawn from historical letters, speeches, journals, songs and other personal accounts including recordings of former slaves. Charles Maryan directs an ensemble of seven which includes actor-turned-newscaster-turned-actor Art McFarland.
