Guest Blog: Barney Norris On The Ethics of Telling And What He Loves About The World
by Guest Blog: Barney Norris
- May 23, 2022
This year I’ve thought a lot about the ethics of telling. This is a subject with wide implications. It’s about ‘telling on’ other kids in the playground; it’s about ‘grassing’ on criminality; it’s about the impact of speech and the way telling a story is a way of giving attention to something.
BWW Review: YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO SIT IN Is a Dream of a Production at Stages Theatre
by Armando Urdiales
- Apr 11, 2022
The story goes that Stages staff member, Eboni Bell Darcy, was part of the discussion for the theater's reopening season. Ideas evidently floated around in the zoom call. It was Eboni's idea for Stages to commission their own jukebox musical. This excellent idea led to the creation of ShaWanna Renee Rivon's YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO SIT IN. One would think that a musical highlighting Houston's generational social justice problems would be what some call a 'downer.' Instead, Rivon's creation has become, at least for me, the crowning achievement of the 21-22 Houston theater season.
BWW Interview: Jennifer Diamond of LET ME BE ME at The Green Room 42 on December 10th
by Stephen Mosher
- Dec 2, 2021
As the spring of 2020 was preparing for its big debut, so were the Diamond ladies. Jennifer was preparing to premiere her show LET ME BE ME, and Leia Diamond was getting ready to debut... period. The daughter of Jennifer and her husband Rob was in Las Vegas, waiting to be born by way of a surrogate with whom the impending parents had spent months cultivating a relationship, working together to make the miracle of parenting a reality. When the global health crisis hit the shores of these United States, Diamond's show went the same direction of every other live entertainment opportunity - the back burner. Not so for Leia - she was going to have her inaugural bow, no matter what was happening in world affairs; pandemic or no, Baby Girl Diamond was on her way.
Student Blog: The Power of 'No'

As actors, we grow up programmed to say yes to everything and everyone. We hear that everyone is replaceable, and if you don't try anything and everything- you get fired. I learned to bend over backwards in order to please people and get roles. Jenny helped us rewrite that narrative. She helped me remember that we don't have to say yes to everyone. We are all just people, responsible for taking care of ourselves. We all deserve the autonomy to choose what makes us happy and safe.
BWW Review: THE AGITATORS at Iowa Stage: An Amazing Production That Reminds Us How Important It Is To Keep On Fighting
by DC Felton
- May 3, 2021
What is an agitator? The New Oxford American Dictionary describes an agitator as a person who urges others to protest or rebel. In today's heated political climate, we see agitators on both sides of the aisle, some agitating for good and others not. Iowa Stage's production of 'The Agitators' by Mat Smart takes a look at two agitators from our history and the struggles they both ensued. While this production was only available for a limited time, it left its audiences with a powerful and thought-provoking play. It left them thinking not only about the differences of the times these two agitators lived in but the similarities to the world we live in now.
