A saucy French maid doing the Charleston with a handsome chap in tennis whites sets the scene for the most delightful escapism in town: Matthew White's gossamer-light revival of Sandy Wilson's 1953 love letter to the Roaring Twenties. The European premiere of the hit Off-Broadway play The Niceties by Eleanor Burgess is now playing at the Finborough Theatre for a strictly limited four-week season.

Janie Dee and Moronke Akinola take on the roles of history professor Janine and Zoe, her passionate student. During a meeting to review the latter's thesis, their conversation about trivial grammatical mistakes in the writing escalates to a complicated discussion on race. Matthew Iliffe directs the debate play, revealing systemic internalised racism and the ugly truth of standing on the middle ground.
