Everyman Theatre's next show in the 2018-2019 season is The Importance of Being Earnest, a light-hearted romantic comedy packed with twists, turns, and witty repartee.  Directed by Joseph W. Ritsch Artistic Director of Rep Stage, the tale of worlds turned topsy-turvy with assumed identities lampoons the absurdity of Victorian virtues.  The Everyman production showcases a subtext that is as relevant today as it was to its intended 19th-century audience-Wilde's "bachelor" compatriots-inside jokes abound through subtly scripted details.  The play runs December 4 - December 30, 2018.  

Having previously broken Everyman Theatre's all-time advance sales record, The Book of Joseph (on stage through June 10) has now achieved a new box office feat, unseating August Wilson's Fences as the theatre's highest-grossing play in 28 years-with 13 performances still to go including an added weeknight on June 5.

So much time and effort goes into presenting any sort of play... from the written word, direction, set design, lighting, sound, and especially the actors. And here in I'LL GET YOU BACK AGAIN, it's the play that needs a little work and tweaking.

With its emphasis on both 1960s psychedelic rock music and the Three Stooges, it would seem the latest offering at the Round House Theatre was tailored precisely for my taste.

Lillian Hellman's 1941 play WATCH ON THE RHINE isn't often produced, but it's certainly a relevant one in today's troubling times. As directed in the round by Jackie Maxwell at Arena Stage, it's probably one of the best examples of a scintillating, well-written script being brought to the stage by a uniformly excellent cast. The end result is a must-see production for the serious theatergoer.

Four-time Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner Marsha Mason, known for her performances in the films Cinderella Liberty, The Goodbye Girl, Chapter Two and Only When I Laugh, stars as Fanny Farrelly under esteemed director Jackie Maxwell, former artistic director of Canada's Shaw Festival. Set in Washington, D.C. on the brink of U.S. involvement in World War II, Hellman's suspenseful drama was hailed by the Chicago Tribune as "dramatically gripping and genuinely moving." Watch on the Rhine runs February 3-March 5, 2017 in the Fichandler Stage.
