Honolulu Theatre for Youth's season finale SHOCKA: The Story of Energy and Hawaii completes a three part series of original musical theatre productions exploring topics important to Hawaii's keiki.  Following the company's exploration of local food and water, SHOCKA focuses on Hawaii's energy future.  From the energy that fuels our bodies to how we power our electrical grid this sci-fi rock musical educates and entertains audiences of all ages.  "One of our most important roles as an organization is to include young people in the conversations that are shaping their future and there is nothing more impactful to our future in Hawaii right now than energy" says HTY's Artistic Director, Eric Johnson. SHOCKA will have audiences dancing in their seats while transforming them into the Energy Stars our future needs!

MASTERS OF THE CURRENTS Receives World Premiere at HTY

Honolulu Theatre for Youth and TeAda Productions are mounting the world premiere of Masters of the Currents a theatrical journey into the reality of life as a young Micronesian immigrant in the Aloha State. Led by TeAda creative duo Leilani Chan and Ova Saopeng, the piece has been created through first hand interviews and community participation. Masters of the Currents shares the journey of young Micronesians and their conflict of identity as they struggle to be accepted by their new peers in Hawaii while still holding onto the rich cultural traditions of Micronesia. This transformative piece tackles the heartbreaking reality of the bullying that exists within our Aloha state and sets out to change the tide of people's perception of the Micronesian community says director Leilani Chan.

Over 300 distinguished guests from the worlds of business, culture, media and philanthropy came together last night for an inspiring awards dinner benefitting Malaria No More. The global nonprofit organization honored Alere Inc. (NYSE: ALR) and Al Jazeera America for their commitments to the fight against malaria. The event raised $1.47 million. The event featured dinner and entertainment from the Afro-beat band and dancers from the Tony award-winning Broadway Show FELA!, Chop and Quench. The global nonprofit organization dedicated to ending malaria deaths honored Alere with the Corporate Citizenship Award and Al Jazeera America with the Media Leader. Scroll down for photos!
