Kicking off on Sunday, March 17 with the beloved Stella Shouting Contest, the Tennessee Williams and New Orleans Literary Festival returns to the historic French Quarter for its 38th annual celebration of contemporary literature, theatre, New Orleans culture, and, of course, Tennessee Williams. Literary, theatre, music, and cultural events are set for March 20 - 24.

Directed by Gendell Hing-Hernández, CITIZEN opens on October 21. This Word for Word and Z Space production tells the tale of Salvador, born in the U.S. and raised in Mexico, the son of an American Indian mother and a Mexican father.

This year I’ve thought a lot about the ethics of telling. This is a subject with wide implications. It’s about ‘telling on’ other kids in the playground; it’s about ‘grassing’ on criminality; it’s about the impact of speech and the way telling a story is a way of giving attention to something.

In a working partnership approaching three decades, composer Stewart Copeland and librettist Jonathan Moore bring their latest opera 'Electric Saint' to Kunstfest Weimar in September of 2020. The project is a co-commission of the innovative Kunstfest alongside Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar (DNT). The world premiere performance will take place at Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar on September 6, 2020, with seven subsequent performances in Weimar.

Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater announces the company for A Thousand Splendid Suns, adapted for the stage by Ursula Rani Sarma and based on the 2007 New York Times bestselling novel by Khaled Hosseini (Kite Runner). Set in 1992 in war-torn Afghanistan, this gripping story centers around a friendship that develops between two Afghan women following a tragedy. While facing insurmountable odds of a brutal and oppressive way of life, the two form an unlikely bond in a heart-rending fight for survival. Directed by Carey Perloff, A Thousand Splendid Suns runs January 17 - March 1, 2020 in the Kreeger Theater.

A number of prominent theatre companies and artists from Ireland are taking part in this year's 9th annual Origin's 1st Irish Festival taking place from September 6 to October 3.

The Bible features parables, stories and encounters of the life and trials of Jesus and his disciples; but a figure who is so prominent in that story - his mother, Mary, only speaks four times. Her role as a matriarch is often silent, and the Aaron Willis-directed THE TESTAMENT OF MARY, now playing at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts, explores what Mary would say if she could have said more. The play, by Colm Toibin (based on his 2012 novella of the same name) looks at the life and death of Jesus from the perspective of Mary - through the eyes of a traumatized and grieving woman and mother. The 70-minute solo performance is a star-vehicle for Nancy Palk who embraces this challenging, trying and controversial role.

The production opens with a press night today, Saturday February 27 and runs through April 3 in San Francisco's Z Below Theater.
