Don Grigware Announces His Best in LA Theatre for 2012
by Don Grigware - Dec 24, 2012

The choices I have made are based solely on the plays and performances that I actually saw. I cannot see all the great talent that is out there in LA; it is physically impossible, as there exist far too many theatre/cabaret performances for one person to cover. So if a choice of yours is not on my list, chances are, I did not see that play or performance...or, it just did not make the final cut. I also do not separate Equity from Equity waiver; I consider all the productions/performances I select to be of top-of-the-line quality/professionalism.

BWW Reviews: Colony Brings Religion into the Spotlight with THE SAVANNAH DISPUTATION
by Don Grigware - Jun 19, 2012

For religious fanatics & theologians The Savannah Disputation should hold plenty of interest, as Evan Smith has written a smart exploration of Catholic versus Fundamentalist beliefs. Do you really know your faith inside out? Can you interpret the Bible with intelligence, keeping an open mind? Or do you accept tenets blindly, permitting them to govern everything you say and do? For those less religiously inclined or whose religion does not include Jesus, think twice before attending this play. But if you're into drama purely for its entertainment value, there is no dispute as to Savannah's remarkable four person cast, sharp direction by Cameron Watson and offbeat piquant humor.

BWW Reviews: New American Theatre's Consummate I NEVER SANG FOR MY FATHER
by Don Grigware - Jun 1, 2011

Fathers and sons, whether a fit or a mismatch, forever struggle in some manner, opening up endless dramatic possibilities. Robert Anderson's memorable play I Never Sang For My Father (1968) depicts an iron-willed, unyielding patriarch in his declining years. Tom Garrison (Philip Baker Hall), a former mayor and member of the Rotary Club, was a pillar of the community and, sadly enough, revered as a model of male perfection. Not unlike many men of his era, he was a self-made man, who rose out of poverty and was proud of it, but quick to judge others' faults particularly those of his own father and his children, causing a rift and, in one case, permanent alienation. With senility setting in, Garrison prefers to stand alone rather than accept the support and care of his son Gene (John Sloan), who tries desperately to love him. The New American Theatre's current production may stand the test of time as the quintessential representation of this classic tragedy of a father/son relationship.
