New Stages 35 presents Shaker New Plays Series

The Shaker Heights High School Theatre Arts Department presents the thirty-fifth festival of new plays, written, directed, performed and co-produced by students, Stages 35: Shaker New Plays Series, March 15, 16, 17 & 18 at 7 PM with a 9:15 PM show on Friday, March 17 in our intimate black box theatre, Stage 3. Six one-act plays will be presented as part of a full season of theatrical events, which began with Urinetown and concludes with Nevermore: A Spring Ensemble Show, in April.

The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) is celebrating the induction of four outstanding artists into the NYFA Hall of Fame during its annual benefit tonight, April 12, 2016, at 583 Park Avenue. The evening's honorees are James Casebere, Faith Ringgold, Anna Deavere Smith, and Zhou Long.

Mad Horse Theatre company has mounted a full production of Brent Askari's savvy, subtle, sometimes serious comedy, Digby's Home as its third main stage production of the 2015-2016 season, having first been introduced the work to Portland audience's at the company's BY LOCAL series. The play, which chronicles the return to a small New England town of Digby Preston, a maladroit middle-aged man who has pursued his dreams of being a comedian in Los Angeles, and now comes back for a family visit hoping to repair family relationships and rediscover his place in his hometown. Digby's odyssey proves to be one subtle disappointment after another, and he soon finds the journey may actually be more meaningful than the homecoming, but his stay is not without some resolution.

Get into the holiday spirit with "Christmas Music Thru the Years," a holiday concert to benefit York Little Theatre, at 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 12 at the historic Hugh McCall Mansion on Market Street. The concert will feature Dr. Robina Santaniello , soprano, Peter Powers, a dean at Messiah College and well-known tenor from the Harrisburg area, Michael Anderson, a local attorney and baritone who has performed many opera roles and won awards for his voice.  Victor Fields, the accompanist, is one of the best pianists in the area and Anna Hallett, a high school senior, will play violin.

South Portland's Mad Horse Theatre Company closes its 2014-2015 season with a gripping rendition of Jon Robin Baitz's 2011 drama, Other Desert Cities. The play explores the painful bonds and conflicts in a family whose relationships have are strained by differences in political thinking, by the loss of their oldest son, and by their daughter's desire to recount the truth as she sees it. The drama, set largely in 2004 in the bellicose post 9/11 America of George W. Bush, is about the fine line between acting and reality, the dark depths of deception, and the devastating, yet healing consequences of discovering the truth.

Luckily, the woman is Italian soprano Anna Caterina Antonacci and the composer of LA VOIX HUMAINE is Francis Poulenc. Together, they made for a fascinating performance at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall.

South Portland's Madhorse Theatre Company has chosen to mount Kimberly Akimbo, an edgy, quirky, wrenching comedy by David Lindsay-Abaire, as their second offering of the season. The five-character tale of a teenager's coming to terms with a strange disease that has caused her to age prematurely, with her damaged and dysfunctional New Jersey family, and with the pangs of first love is etched with colorful characters and occasionally brilliant dialogue and is given a sensitive production by director Nathan Speckman.
