Fells Point Corner Theatre Presents THE QUICKENING
by Stephi Wild
- Apr 29, 2018
Few things frighten and intrigue as much as a ghost story, but incorporating new, thought-provoking questions around the idea of what happens after death can turn a plot into something special. "The Quickening" takes these questions in unexpected directions certain to keep audiences at the edge of their seats. It is the story of a pregnant woman who moves into a new home in Richmond, Virginia, only to discover that all is certainly not as it seems. She faces challenge after challenge with the help of her mother, and her mathematician neighbor, all the while standing against the skepticism of her husband, who has little faith in the "unexplained".

The past is an inviting but dangerous place. When we are haunted by the ghosts of our past, we attribute their torment to the deeds they've left undone. Benevolent or otherwise, these spirits employ the living to serve in their endeavor for rest... or unrest.

Let's say you like farce. Let's say you like Hitchcock films. Let's say you want a posh production for a shoestring budget. Let's say you need a cast of thousands but only have four actors. Let's say it's a long shot. But it might work. It could work. And THE 39 STEPS, now playing at Fells Point Corner Theatre, does work, very well.

THE 39 STEPS adapted by Patrick Barlow a reimagining of Alfred Hitchcock's famous film of the same title, is a theatrical tour-de-force punctuated by over-the-top Monty Python-ish melodrama. Set in 1930s England and Scotland, the play, performed by only four actors, tells the story of a dapper London man (Richard Hannay) who tries to prevent a top-secret agent from stealing classified air-defense information. After the agent's sudden inexplicable murder, our hero Richard remains the only suspect and is forced to go on the run with an attractive and suave companion in attempts to clear his name.

Furies scream, goddesses judge, and dead girls ponder in Ann Turiano's THE PRETTIES, an adaptation of Aeschylus' blood-soaked trilogy The Oresteia. The voices of Clytemnestra, Cassandra, Electra and other women frame the journey of Orestes as he seeks revenge for the murder of his father, Agamemnon, by his mother. This adaptation captures and reinvents the entire Greek trilogy in one evening, and still gets you home way before midnight.
