Queens Symphony Orchestra to Kick Off Family Concerts with WHO STOLE THE MONA LISA?, 10/6

For sixty years since its inception, the Queens Symphony Orchestra (QSO) has been delighting local audiences with performances of symphonic music. Beginning in October, QSO will offer a family concert series open to all, and appropriate for all ages, at the LeFrak Concert Hall, located in Flushing on the campus of Queens College.

BALLERINA SWAN, a 50-minute family show blending dance, theater and puppetry, tells the story of Sophie, a Central Park swan with dreams of becoming a ballerina and dancing in Swan Lake. Based on the critically-acclaimed by The New York Times children's book BALLERINA SWAN by former NYC Ballet prima ballerina Allegra Kent, the show features three dancers and a dancer/puppeteer who operates a five-foot dancing swan puppet!

It wasn't until Frederick Ashton undertook a new creation of the ballet that it finally became an international hit. He referred to it as his 'poor man's Pastorale,' a lovely reference to Beethoven's symphony where things go from simplicity to thunderstorms and back to normalcy and contentment with the world. He commissioned The Royal Opera House conductor, John Lanchberry, to orchestrate a new score that, while recalling French culture and manners (it did begin as a French ballet after all), is firmly rooted in an English sensibility

Tanaquil LeClercq was one of Balanchine's most famous ballerinas from the late 1940s until 1956. Unfortunately we don't have much footage of her in full length ballets, so here's one that spotlights her immense gifts not only for dance, but comedy as well.

Kravis Center Hosts World Premiere Of 'Steven Caras: See Them Dance'

The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts will host the world premiere of the new public TV documentary STEVEN CARAS: SEE THEM DANCE on February 24. Presented by Arizona PBS, the film concerns the life and work of Mr. Caras, a former New York City Ballet dancer, who transformed his career to become one of the world's most renowned dance photographers. Currently a resident of West Palm Beach, Caras is also a published author, guest lecturer, ballet master and founding chairman of the Randolph A. Frank Prize for the Performing Arts in Palm Beach. The evening's festivities will be emceed by Terrence Mann. In addition to performances by NDI dancers, Allegra Kent, George S. Irving, and Isaiah Sheffer will perform Aesop's Fable, The Lion and the Mouse. The evening will also honor director and producer James D. Stern. Proceeds benefit National Dance Institute.
