Ludwig van Beethovens 250th birthday year (1770-1827) is an opportunity to introduce all 1.3 million NYC youth, in these crisis-ridden times, Beethovento how one person, armed only with music, can inspire others to do things they never before believed to be impossible. This must be the mission of the Foundation for the Revival of Classical Culture in 2020, and we need your help to do this.So frei, wie streng As free as it is rigorous, Beethoven wrote on his score for his Grosse Fugue, or Great Fugue. How can young people become inspired to think like Beethoven, whether they are engineers, teachers, firemen or farmers? How can educators ignite the inner spark of creativity that lies sleeping in every child? And how does music, especially Classical compositional methods in music, drama, painting, etc, provide the key to unlock and unleash this power?Symposium Presentation:Why Music? (Speaker: Richard Hyman)Richard Hyman believes that the discipline of music is the most effective agent of intellectual growth. He is a strong advocate for rigorous and comprehensive school music programs and for elevating the status of music classes so that they are on par with other academic subjects. He has surveyed over 600 neurobiological studies that explore the unique and unparalleled effects of music training on the development of the brain. Most of these studies, using modern scanning technologies, have uncovered positive changes in brain size and efficiency, cognitive ability, executive function, visuo-spatial and abstract reasoning, motor skills, hearing acuity, and short-term memory, among other beneficial effects. Mr. Hyman will summarize his research and discuss institutional and cultural challenges to the goal of implementing strong music programs.The Principle of Classical Arts (Speaker: Dr. Ned Rosinsky)Dr. Rosinsky will present a personal view of classical art and classical music from his experience as an artist and composer. He will discuss the aspects of art and music that define certain types of work as "classical". He will begin the discussion of art by providing examples of his own work, a series of civil rights paintings. He will first discuss the issue of moral authority implied by the paintings, that the subject of the paintings is actually located outside the canvas, in the movement of the nation toward justice. Once the principal of moral authority is established, the work is finished with freedom of improvisation. He will then apply this approach to music composition, demonstrate with a sample of his own work, and show a parallel sense of moral authority coupled with freedom of improvisation. The solution of this apparent paradox, necessity versus freedom, requires the development of artistic and musical perception on a high plane. This will be facilitated with the music, as with the portrait paintings, by the creation of internal representations of the work within the creative imagination of the audience.Social and Cultural Factors in Promoting or Hindering Creativity: An Interdisciplinary Perspective(Speaker: Dr. Charles H. Borowsky, joined by Dr. Dr. Cecylia Barczyk-Borowsky, Prof. Elizabeth Borowsky, Dr. Frances Grace Borowsky, and Dr. Emmanuel Borowsky)Based on his longitudinal studies of social and cultural change worldwide since the 1960s (particularly in the United States, Europe, and Asia), Dr. Charles Borowsky will analyze the major sociocultural factors that impact or promote individual and societal creativity. The results were presented in a joint session at Nankai University a few days before the Tiananmen Square Incident. Dr. Borowsky has conducted joint projects with several academic and cultural institutions in Europe and Asia.Currently, Dr. Charles H. Borowsky is the President of the International Institute for Suburban and Regional Studies with centers in 16 countries. Dr. Borowsky has been active in promoting cultural exchange and cooperation, especially in the field of music. While at Yale, under the request of President Brewster, he established the Yale Committee for Cultural Relations with Eastern Europe/Poland, which became instrumental for effective academic and cultural exchange during the Iron Curtain. From 1994 through 1998,on the request of The B&B Foundation of Tel Aviv, Dr. Borowsky conducted a feasibility study for establishing an interdisciplinary and intercultural institution of higher education in Israel. In 2001, Dr. Borowsky co-organized the conference "Local Music Traditions in the Age of Globalization" in Amman, Jordan, under the auspices of UNESCO and the International Music Council. Following the event, he served as UNESCO editor for the publication, "Tradition and Innovation in Music." He also is the elected President of the International Friends of Music Association, Senior Coordinator of the Asian Center for Society, Culture, and Development, and founder of the Intermuse International Music Institute and Festival USA. An accomplished singer and harmonica player, Dr. Borowsky frequently performs with The American Virtuosi, touring internationally to promote "Music: The Best Bridge Between People." He is the recipient of the I.J. Paderewski Award for Distinguished Contributions to Society and Culture.
