South Bend Civic Theatre Announces Auditions

For Leads in 2020 Production of “West Side Story”

South Bend Civic Theatre will be producing a ground-breaking production of “West Side Story” in partnership with The South Bend Symphony Orchestra and La Casa de Amistad in April of 2020.

The CIVIC will be holding early auditions for the 4 leads (Maria, Tony, Anita, and Bernardo) on Tuesday, May 7th, 2019, at the First United Methodist Social Hall. Details are as follows:

Early Audition Date: TUESDAY, MAY 7

Time: 6:00-9:00PM

Location: First United Methodist Church, Social Hall (Lower Level)

The audition is only for the following four (4) lead characters:

Maria - A hopeless romantic and innocent young girl. She falls in love with Tony and finds herself at the center of the violent conflict between the two gangs. Bernardo's sister. Puerto Rican.

(Gender: Female, Age: 18 to 21, Vocal range top: C6, Vocal range bottom: Bb3)

Tony - A romantic young man and former leader of the Jets, he has found a new lifestyle now. Tony finds himself violently torn between his friendships and love. Falls in love to Maria and meets an untimely death. Genuinely sweet and sincere. (Gender: Male, Age: 25 to 30, Vocal range top: Bb4, Vocal range bottom: Bb2)

Anita - Feisty and assertive. She dispenses older sister advice to Maria and tries to shield her from the dangers of the gangs. Bernardo's girlfriend and Maria's friend. Puerto Rican.

(Gender: Female, Age: 25 to 30, Vocal range top: D5, Vocal range bottom: F3)

Bernardo - A proud, strong, handsome Puerto Rican man. Bernardo seeks to carve out territory as a sense of identity for he and his friends. Maria's brother and Anita's boyfriend. Leader of the Sharks.

(Gender: Male, Age: 25 to 35, Vocal range top: Eb4, Vocal range bottom: Bb2)

All audition materials will be provided. Please wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes as the audition will include dance. You are encouraged to bring a prepared piece to sing, but this is not required.

Auditions for the remainder of the cast will take place in January, 2020. Rehearsals will be February-April, 2020. Performances will be at the Morris Performing Arts Center on Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19, 2020.

The production is a three-way partnership between the South Bend Civic Theatre, the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, and La Casa de Amistad.
