Characters:
Julia Dowling – a Long Island widow (50’s – 60’s)
Visitor/Jack/Death – a charmer who takes the rules of his job very seriously (30’s – early 40’s)
Beth Dowling – Julia’s daughter – a no nonsense, take charge woman (30’s)
Aunt Rosemary – Julia’s sister – opinionated and not shy about expressing herself (50’s – 60’s)
Uncle Bernie – Rosemary’s husband – laid back – friendly (50’s – 60’s)
Paul Dowling – Julia’s son, an emerging song writer (30’s)
Melissa Rosen – Paul’s girlfriend, an aspiring actress (20’s – early 30’s)
Father John Brennan – Julia’s parish priest (30’s – 50’s)
Matthew Harris – a melancholy suicide dragged along to the party by Death (20’s – early 30’s)
Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.
Synopsis:
Julia Dowling has an unexpected visitor who intends to escort her off to the afterlife. Infusing comedy into the classic Death Takes A Holiday, The Christmas Spirit is set in contemporary Long Island. Julia persuades Death to give her one more day to enjoy Christmas and invites him to be her guest at a festive party. The next day the house fills with bickering relatives, friends, the local priest, and Death masquerading as a human, singing carols and drinking eggnog. Moments of high farce, drama, and even romance arise as bright holiday fantasies collide with a not so merry reality.
