Directed by Rick Bindhamer

Casting

PRESTON - a wealthy spoiled stuffed shirt who is soon revealed to be quirkily goofy. Preston starts the ball rolling with a letter of complaint to a store in New York.

DAHLIA - is the assistant manager who replies — rather flippantly. She almost becomes so unsympathetic that you wouldn’t want to stay in the room with her when she's at her worse, yet there’s a certain charm underneath her abrasive surface.

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.

Audition dates

Monday, May 7th & Tuesday, May 8th.

6:00-7:30 p.m.

Synopsis: Hate Mail is a hilarious comedy that tells the story of Preston, a spoiled rich kid who meets his match in Dahlia, an angst-filled artist. Their worlds collide when Preston sends a complaint letter that gets Dahlia fired from her job, and then there's no turning back. The verbal abuse escalates quickly, and the characters’ words have consequences in their outside lives. It gets wilder and funnier as we follow the two through their increasingly crazed correspondence as they move from hate to love, and then right back again.

CONTENT NOTES: Adult language and content

Comedy 80 - 95 minutes

There will be no need to memorize lines, as actors will be reading directly from the letters, faxes and emails of the two character's correspondences. Staging will be simple, and included on the copy. Rehearsals will begin immediately (as soon as possible once the play is cast,) with most of the focus to be on the character's personality, attitudes and reactions to what the other wrote.

About the Script

Hate Mail was originally inspired by the idea of doing a parody of A.R. Gurney's epistolary styles play Love Letters, combined with the possibility of writing via actual correspondence between two authors. The playwrights quickly strayed from the original concept, and never went back. Hate Mail therefore, is not an parody of Love Letters, nor of any other epistolary work, but instead is a extemporaneous work created via the reactions of the writers - acting in character - to each others replies. (Kira acting as DAHLIA and Bill as PRESTON.) Their correspondences through fax and internet communication. Theirs is a nastier, more venal and ofttimes much sillier world, following the rules of good improvisation; accepting what is received while making attempts to surprise each other. It is recommended that the staging be simple and pacing crisp, with honest, natural character reactions, and with the aid of lighting and/or sound cues as needed.
