DAY OF ABSENCE - Metamorphosis

Open auditions for "Day of Absence," a critically acclaimed play by Douglas Turner Ward, will be held on Monday, January 22 from 6pm-8pm. The auditions will be held at:

The Sammons Center for the Arts
Historic Turtle Creek Pump Station
3630 Harry Hines Boulevard
Dallas, TX 75219

Casting a satire about an imaginary Southern town, where all the black people have suddenly disappeared. Infants are crying because they are being tended to by strange parents. The Mayor pleads for the President, Governor, and the NAACP to send him "a jackpot of jigaboos." "Day of Absence" is a provocative play presented as a reverse minstrel show (an almost entirely Black cast painted in white-face). The commentary on white privilege and white identity in the absence of people to oppress is quite revolutionary.

ROLES:

Announcer - Announcer is the only “bonafide white character” in the play. The part is a T.V. personality and can be played by a man or a woman.

Luke - Luke is Black male painted in white-face. He is a “country cracker.”

John - John is a Black man painted in white-face. He is a young father and husband.

Rastus - Rastus is the only black character without white-face. He is a stereotypical Black, country pleaser.
