AUDITION NOTICE
Announcing auditions for The Players at Barker’s second show of the season: DANCING LESSONS by Mark St. Germain. Two major roles: 1M:“Ever” 25-45, 1W: “Senga” 25-45; Three minor roles: 1W: “Aunt Lynn” roughly 50+, 1M:“Speaker”/“Rudolpho”roughly 25+, 1W “Announcer”/ “Dr. O’Rourke” roughly 25+.
Auditions will be held onsite at The Barker Playhouse, 400 Benefit Street, Providence from 7-9 pm. Wednesday/Thursday, September 9-10. Please bring a resume, recent photo/headshot, and prepare a one-minute monologue of your choosing. Also be prepared to read from the script and vary performance according to given directions. We will be especially tuned in to vocal clarity and control, as well as stage presence. Call backs TBD. Follow this <link> to sign up.
Rehearsal schedule will be Mondays 7-9 via Zoom (mostly for tech), and onsite at The Barker Playhouse, Tues-Thurs 6:30-8:30 pm. Filming and editing of performances TBD. **Actors cast in minor roles will be called for fewer rehearsals and according to a separate schedule, TBD.
Directed by Christin L. Goff, Asst. Directed by Mike Daniels, this play will be performed as a composite work, linking stage/film/streamed performance techniques. Rehearsed in person and performed on stage, scenes will be filmed and then edited together for a final performance which then will be streamed for viewing at home. COVID-19 has forced many theaters to reimagine playacting methods and practice and The Players at Barker is no different. DANCING LESSONS will provide The Players and its audiences the opportunity to participate in a new showcase style of playing, utilizing new methods of storytelling. From the directors’ seats, stage, and behind the scenes, we hope to provide everyone a “front row seat” to enjoy the show.

DANCING LESSONS by Mark St. Germain centers on Ever, a young man with Asperger’s syndrome, who seeks the instruction of a Broadway dancer to learn enough dancing to survive an awards dinner. The dancer, Senga, however, is recovering from an injury that may stop her dancing career permanently. As their relationship unfolds, they’re both caught off-guard by the discoveries — both hilarious and heartwarming — that they make about each other and about themselves.
