Broadway Bods, New York’s first fat-positive queer theater company, will be holding in-person auditions for their first ever 10-minute play festival, to be held November 17 and 18 at the Tank. Broadway Bods prioritizes the work of artists living in plus-size or fat bodies, those who fall under the queer & trans umbrella, those who are neurodiverse and disabled, and those who are Black, Indigenous, AAPI, Latine/Hispanic, and/or people of color; we invite all those who feel strongly aligned with our mission to audition.
Auditions will be IN-PERSON at Abron Arts Center, 466 Grand St, on Saturday, October 14th from 4-9pm. The Abron Arts Center is ADA-compliant and has an elevator; however, Studio 1 (where auditions will be held) has seven steps from the 3rd floor, and therefore may not be accessible to those who use a wheelchair or have mobility issues. The ground floor entrance is accessible; our audition monitor will meet you there, and please be sure to let the audition monitor know if you are unable to access the studio, so that we can accommodate and come meet you at an accessible location. We want to see you!
Rehearsals will likely run October 16-November 16 on weekday evenings and some weekend afternoons, but can be adjusted based on the directors' and actors' needs. All actors cast will likely be asked to play two roles. Actors will be paid a stipend of $100 for the festival. (Please note: there is no fee to participate in this festival. Broadway Bods is committed to equity, and the understanding that all work should be paid, and we are proud to start fulfilling our goal of paying our performers in our second year of operation.) The play festival will be held at The Tank, NYC on November 17-18.
Please prepare one dramatic and one comedic monologue, each around a minute long.
Please note that all of these roles are in different shows, in which some characters have already been cast. The character descriptions are courtesy of the playwrights; director's notes on casting are indicated. The characters are grouped together based on the play they are in, but again, you will likely be asked to play two roles. Please adhere to any limits listed in the character descriptions, but bring your authentic self to the space. We encourage all gender identities and expressions to bring their perspectives to the roles listed.
Jordan: (20s-30s): Alyx’s partner, heckler. (From the director: looking to cast a butch/masc-of-center/masc-presenting actor of any gender who isn't afraid to be an asshole.)

MRS. SIMMONS: (50’s) A very rich and slightly overweight, high-society lady who spends much of her time and money trying to keep her roving-eyed husband from running off with some young intern.
NICHOLAS: (30's) CHRISTOPHER’S more flamboyantly gay partner. He has a cutting wit which gets him into trouble sometimes. He also has a caring side which is less often seen.

Odin: (he/him) “Allfather.” Patriarch of the Æsir Gods. God of War, the Dead, Poetry, Runes, and Magic. LOKI’s blood brother and FREYA’s husband, whom ODIN calls Frigg. ODIN has one obsession: gathering forbidden wisdom and knowledge of the future by any means necessary (which includes sacrificing one of his eyes, hanging himself from a branch of the World Tree, and marrying FREYA for her vast magical prowess). He has foreseen the events of Ragnarök and has worked tirelessly to prepare for the impending doom.

The mission of Broadway Bods is to provide opportunities for performers living in larger bodies, showcase stories that share real lived experiences, and create an inclusive, safe theatre space for both performers and audiences. Founded by Grace Rosehill in 2021, Broadway Bods is committed to fighting size stigma and fatphobia in the performing arts industry. Too often, artists are dismissed because of what they look like, instead of the talent they bring to the table. It's time we showcase diverse experiences and stories with diverse bodies.
