PSO Explores The Flute At March Events

The Princeton Symphony Orchestra (PSO) focuses on the flute this month at events throughout Princeton which collectively highlight the sound, history, artistry, and versatility of the instrument.

Thursday, March 14 at 7:30 pm - Film - The PSO and the Princeton Garden Theatre present director Ingmar Berman's 1975 film adaptation of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera The Magic Flute. The opera's hero Tamino is given a magic flute to protect him as he travels on his quest to rescue the princess Pamina. Rated G; 2h 15min. At the Princeton Garden Theatre. Tickets ($6.57-$11.50) available at www.princetongardentheatre.org.

Wednesday, March 20 at 7 pm - Talk - In partnership with the Princeton Public Library, the Princeton Symphony Orchestra presents Exploring the Flute with flutist Melanie Williams. Ms. Williams brings her collection of flutes of various shapes and sizes to her discussion of the instrument, its history and role in orchestral music. There will be a brief question and answer period following the presentation. Princeton Public Library Community Room. Free and open to the public.

Saturday, March 23 at 1 pm - PSO BRAVO! Masterclass - four students from area schools will prepare repertoire for recital under the guidance of Metropolitan Opera Orchestra principal flutist Chelsea Knox. The masterclass is presented in partnership with Westminster Conservatory, the Community Music School of Westminster College of the Arts, Rider University. Hillman Hall, Westminster Choir College campus. Observation of the masterclass is free and open to the public, but ticketed reservations are required: www.princetonsymphony.org.

Saturday, March 23 at 8 pm, Sunday March 24 at 4 pm - Concert - Princeton Symphony Orchestra (PSO) welcomes Chelsea Knox, principal flute of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, for a performance of Lowell liebermann's Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, Op. 39. Also on the program are Missy Mazzoli's Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres) and Anton n Dvo k's Symphony No. 8 in G Major, Op. 88. Rossen Milanov conducts. Richardson Auditorium on the campus of Princeton University. 3 pm Pre-Concert Talk free to Sunday ticket-holders. Richardson Auditorium, Alexander Hall, on the campus of Princeton University. Ms. Williams brings her collection of flutes of various shapes and sizes to her discussion of the instrument, its history and role in orchestral music. There will be a brief question and answer period following the presentation.

Melanie Williams calls New York City and Navarre, Florida home and is currently a C.V. Starr doctoral candidate at The Juilliard School. She was first introduced to the six-holed, 1-keyed baroque flute as a junior at The Oberlin Conservatory of Music (BM 2012), and her loves of music and history have been inseparably intertwined since. She is the founder of Kleine Blumen and the co-founder of Filigree Baroque, both all-female groups. Ms. Williams is on faculty at Juilliard in the school's Evening Division and is general manager of Bach Vespers at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in NYC. She maintains active performance and research endeavors and is a 2018 Presser Graduate Music Award recipient. Internationally, she has performed in France, Germany, Austria, England, Canada, and China on repertoire from Cl rambault to Beethoven.

The presentation is an accompaniment to the PSO's DVO K / LIEBERMANN / MAZZOLI concert featuring Lowell liebermann's Concerto for Flute and Orchestra performed by Metropolitan Opera Orchestra principal flutist Chelsea Knox. Tickets to the Saturday March 23, 8pm and Sunday March 24, 4pm performances are available at www.princetonsymphony.org.

Soundtracks takes place in the library's Community Room, and is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Soundtracks is presented in partnership with the Princeton Public Library and made possible this season through the support of VelocIT
