PRESS RELEASE
Rotterdam, 13 December 2018

Operadagen Rotterdam announces first (world) premieres

Experimental, amazing, with a touch of humour, and at the highest international level. These characteristics define Operadagen Rotterdam's new programme. The opera and music-theatre festival presents more than 100 performances in major theatres and unexpected locations around the city, from 17 through 26 May 2019.

Audiences are treated to several (world) premieres, including the modern dance opera 8: METAMORPHOSIS by Nicole Beutler, the rock opera Sylvia by the Belgian director Fabrice Murgia, and the world-famous opera Einstein on the Beach by composer Philip Glass, in a completely new guise. Online ticket sales are starting today. Operadagen Rotterdam Announces First World Premieres Operadagen Rotterdam theme for 2019 is Metamorphosis. Specifically in that context, the world premiere of 8: METAMORPHOSIS is staged in Nieuwe Luxor Theater (Rotterdam) as part of the 10-day festival. M.C. Escher, Ovid, and Purcell's well-known 'Cold Song' were Nicole Beutler's sources of inspiration for this modern dance opera.
20 and 21 May 2019, Nieuwe Luxor Theater

Another world premiere takes place in de Doelen on Friday 24 May, 2019. Mancha Mancha! is composer Patrick van Deurzen's first music-theatre work. The Dutch baritones Henk Neven and Mattijs van de Woerd put themselves in the shoes of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, accompanied by the DoelenEnsemble and the pianists Maarten van Veen and Hans Eijsackers. The result? A hilarious farce brimming with fights and misunderstandings.
24 May, 2019, De Doelen

Dutch premieres
The renowned opera Einstein on the Beach, written by the iconic minimal music composer Philip Glass in 1976, is performed anew by alto/rock singer Suzanne Vega, the Ictus ensemble, and Collegium Vocale Gent. Together, they guarantee a three-hour trance-inducing musical spectacle.
22 May 2019, De Doelen

Il diluvio universale by Michelangelo Falvetti premieres in De Doelen. Leonardo García Alarcón and his Cappella Mediterranea breathe new life into the spellbinding oratory. Il diluvio universale is based on the universal Biblical story of the Flood. Falvetti knows like no other how to capture the drama in music.
20 May 2019, De Doelen

Theater Rotterdam, Schouwburg location, hosts the premieres of the rock opera Sylvia and Het Nationale Lied (The National Song). Fabrice Murgia, the director, has based Sylvia on the diaries of the American poet Sylvia Plath (1932-1963). The Belgian pianist and singer-song writer An Pierlé wrote the music and is accompanied by her own Quartet.
22 May 2019, Theater Rotterdam, Schouwburg location

As part of Het Nationale Lied, Wunderbaum and the Rotterdam choirs Koor op Zuid and Ropera present a singalong night that includes tearjerkers, folk songs, and Dutch rock songs.
26 May 2019, Theater Rotterdam, Schouwburg location

And more!
