Since its creation in March 1901, Rusalka, the most famous opera by Antonin Dvorak, is a success. Mixture of magic, of national folklore and mythology, the work offers the public of the national Theatre in Prague a poetic reflection of nationalist aspirations. Although a few tunes are based on ancient folk melodies and harmonies typical of Czech music appear in places, Rusalka is a work original, lyrical and shimmering, the rich orchestration. The partition of Dvorak reveals a music borrows magic and sensuality, in perfect harmony with the characters and the dramatic circumstances. The libretto by Jaroslav Kvapil inspired largely by La Petite Sirene of Andersen, staged Rusalka, a fairy of water wishing to change into a woman for the love of a handsome prince. This impossible sentiment will experience a dramatic ending that moving. If the invocation of the Moon of the heroine knows a huge celebrity among amateurs of Opera, the work in its entirety took time to impose outside Central Europe.

The France will wait for 1982 to see the creation of Rusalka (at the Opéra de Marseille). The triumph of the performances in Paris in 2002 will complete to convince the haunting beauty of the score by Dvorak.
