Among the different places where you could give performances or make music in the Palace of prince Nikolaus Esterházy, the employer of Joseph Haydn, there was a puppet theatre. Haydn composed several operas for this rare place. This form of particularly aristocratic entertainment was not to the liking of the spectators of the 19th century, which explains the almost total disappearance of these musical pearls.
Philemon und Baucis, composed in 1773, is the unique partition having survived. However, it required reconstruction work which focused recently musicologists.

The work, performed by opera singers hidden to the eyes of the public, is played by puppets placed in a castelet and operated through the ancestral know-how of the company Marionettistica Carlo Colla e Figli.
Philemon und Baucis is similar to a singspiel with dialogue spoken framing of lovely tunes. The argument is based on an episode from Ovid's metamorphoses and although you can expect a satirical comedy, puppet forces, rather, it is a delicate and spiritual ode to virtue.
