While Italy is seeking a successor to the tutelary figure of Giuseppe Verdi, all hopes are on Alfredo Catalani, Elda young composer whose opera, created in 1880, managed to seduce the artistic circles. But with the creation of La Wally twelve years later he displays a mature and definitively conquered the demanding audience of La Scala in Milan. Even the fierce Arturo Toscanini developed a passion for music from Catalani. But the fairy tale turns into a nightmare a year later with the composer's death at the age of thirty-nine, a victim of tuberculosis.

When in 1981 the film Diva Jean-Jacques Beneix appears on the screens, the public discovers the air "Ebben? Do andrò lontana "and makes it a real tube. This air, workhorse of all the great lyric sopranos, as beautiful as it is, can not summarize the work of Alfredo Catalini: La Wally is located halfway between realism then in vogue in Italy and design enough Germanic orchestration.
