Long reception of the Milanese public was the bane of Donizetti. When in summer 1840 the Teatro Carcano displays the first of Anna Bolena, the wind turns. Presented at the Teatro della Canobbiana may 12, 1832, L'elisir d'amore unleashes the enthusiasm. "Gazzetta too favorably considers the elisir and says too many, too many, believe me, too!" wrote the author to his master, Giovanni Simone Mayr, in the aftermath of the first performance. A year after the success of Bolena, Milan was definitively conquered.

This is not so much by the nature of their feelings that the protagonists of L'Elisir differ from those of the more serious works, the specificity of this sentimental comedy lies in the versatility of the State of mind of the characters, their ability to laugh through the tears instead of sinking into the tragedy. It's Nemorino which, more than any other character, operates this sentimental vein. Lyric writing of the character finds its greatest expression in the famous romance "Una furtiva lagrima." The affection of Caruso for the noble melody was the reason for the creation of the work in 1904 at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The tenor made it a workhorse and the elisir made a triumphant breakthrough on the biggest stages in the world.
