Vibrant adaptation of the novel drama to the canons of the art of Opera with Ernani, Verdi and his librettist Piave, have preserved the verbal eloquence by the playwright while musically its flame and its meaning. Here the composer abandoned the Nabucco, I Lombardi patriotic vein to glorify individual freedom.
The title role is an outcast, dear character to Verdi and he will portray with consistency throughout his career, such as I Masnadieri, Manrico of Il Trovatore, the Carlo and Alvaro's Force of destiny. Representative of the extent of grand opera with choir, the magnificent array of Act III is first and foremost the Act where the composer draws precisely contours and gives rise to what became an archetype of voice: Verdi baritone.

Established in 1844 in Venice between Nabucco and Macbeth, Ernani marks a major milestone in the work of the composer, starting point to the psychological development of his character, his later production will divest more this quest for truth.
