Following the success last year of Tarell Alvin McCraney's In the Red and Brown Water, Pillsbury House Theatre and The Mount Curve Company are coming back to the Dowling Studio with The Brothers Size. This exuberantly theatrical drama from one of the country's most exciting new voices weaves together brothers, the bayou, and African mythology to create a stylized story of love and heartache. The production stars James Williams, Namir Smallwood and Gavin Lawrence

When Oshoosi Size (Smallwood) comes home from prison, he hopes to resume his happily aimless life, but his older brother Ogun (Williams), a hard-working mechanic, cannot let Oshoosi forget his mistakes. Does the love of family hold you back or can it help you be free? The Brothers Size dramatizes the ties that bind all of us together and the urges of the human heart that can rip everything apart.

In the Red and Brown Water was hailed as the #1 Show of 2011 by Ed Huyck of City Pages and Rohan Preston of the Star Tribune. Tony-nominated Marion McClinton returns to direct what is sure to be an unforgettable theater event.

Guthrie Theater Frequently Asked Questions FAQ

Guthrie Theater is at Dowling Studio, 818 South 2nd Street, Minneapolis, MN.

The Guthrie Theater opened on May 7, 1963, with a production of Hamlet directed by Sir Tyrone Guthrie, the theater’s founder. The idea for a different kind of theater sparked in 1959 during a series of conversations among Guthrie, an acclaimed theater director, and his two colleagues, Oliver Rea and Peter Zeisler, who were all disenchanted with Broadway. They envisioned a resident theater that would draw world-class artists to perform the classics with the highest professional standards. What began as a summer season of four productions supported by a minimal staff is now a complex organization that serves nearly 350,000 patrons and the Twin Cities community year-round.
