For more than 35 years audiences have treasured the Guthrie's A Christmas Carol, making it a tradition not to be missed. Last season the Guthrie debuted a fresh take on Dickens' ghost story, featuring a new adaptation by British playwright Crispin Whittell, a dazzling set and costumes, beautiful music, and fantastical aerial effects. The Star Tribune raved "I welcome the new energy and sharpness that Dowling, Whittell and the fine cast have brought to this Carol. They have vividly remade a classic."

A miserly and miserable man, Ebenezer Scrooge greets each Christmas with a "bah humbug," until he is visited one Christmas Eve by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Future. Through a restless night, the spirits show him happy memories from his past, cruel realities from the present and the grim future should he continue his cantankerous ways. In the Guthrie's production, Scrooge's story of redemption remains as powerful and uplifting as it ever was. Don't miss your chance to share this holiday favorite with your whole family, an experience they will remember for years to come.

Guthrie Theater Frequently Asked Questions FAQ

Guthrie Theater is at Dowling Studio, 818 South 2nd Street, Minneapolis, MN.

The Guthrie Theater opened on May 7, 1963, with a production of Hamlet directed by Sir Tyrone Guthrie, the theater’s founder. The idea for a different kind of theater sparked in 1959 during a series of conversations among Guthrie, an acclaimed theater director, and his two colleagues, Oliver Rea and Peter Zeisler, who were all disenchanted with Broadway. They envisioned a resident theater that would draw world-class artists to perform the classics with the highest professional standards. What began as a summer season of four productions supported by a minimal staff is now a complex organization that serves nearly 350,000 patrons and the Twin Cities community year-round.
