Grosse Pointe Theatre will present the beloved musical The Sound of Music, with eight performances June 24 through July 3. Performances will be held at Parcells Middle School Auditorium, in Grosse Pointe Woods. Ticket information and show times are available at www.gpt.org/music or by calling 313-881-4004.
With music by Richard Rogers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, The Sound of Music, based on the memoir of Maria Augusta Trapp, tells the story of a young postulant, Maria, who is assigned by her superior, Mother Abbess, to serve as a governess for Captain Georg von Trapps seven children. The setting is Austria, shortly before the takeover of Nazi Germany in 1938.

The original Broadway production opened in 1959, followed by The Sound of Music movie in 1965, both winning numerous awards. The story continues to inspire and capture the hearts of audiences worldwide.

The Sound of Music was the last production Rogers and Hammerstein collaborated on, resulting in many familiar and beautiful songs including Climb Evry Mountain, My Favorite Things, Do-Re-Mi, Sixteen Going on Seventeen, Edelweiss, and The Sound of Music, just to name a few.

"Grosse Pointe Theatre is thrilled to bring this heartwarming production to audiences," said Tim Higgins, director and choreographer of The Sound of Music. "This is a story about family, relationships, love, home, survival, and faith that ultimately guide the decisions the von Trapp family make that will impact their lives forever." Higgins added, "Our talented cast and crew will bring this beautiful story to life. We hope this production will inspire and entertain audiences, but also raise awareness of history and an understanding of how actions can shape the course for future generations."

As the cast and crew prepare to present this beautiful production of The Sound of Music to audiences, a similar real-life crisis is underway in Ukraine, abruptly and horrifically causing millions of families to flee their homes in search of a safe place to live. With so many parallels to The Sound of Music, Grosse Pointe Theatre is partnering with Samaritas New Americans refugee resettlement program to collect personal hygiene items for refugee families from Ukraine and other countries who resettle in southeast Michigan. Visit www.gpt.org/music to review the list of needed items.

Grosse Pointe Theatre will be collecting the personal hygiene items in the auditorium lobby before each performance.

Grosse Pointe Theatres production of The Sound of Music is made possible through the generous support of the John A. and Marlene L. Boll Foundation.
