Based on Ken Kesey's 1962 novel of the same name, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest follows Randle McMurphy, a boisterous, charming, life-affirming rogue who contrives to serve a short sentence in a mental institution rather than in jail. Once there, he clashes with the head nurse, and manages to accomplish what the medical profession had failed to do, leading many of the other patients out of introversion. McMurphy stages numerous revolts against the head nurse, and his defiance, which starts as sport, quickly develops into a grim power struggle with the institution.
