Slow Burn Theatre Company returns to open its highly anticipated 2021/2022 season in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts with Songs for a New World from Tuesday, Oct. 12 through Sunday, Oct. 24. The season is presented by American National Bank, South Florida’s premier community bank.
Slow Burn Theatre Company is ready to reignite the theatrical scene after a forced pandemic shutdown with a scorching 2021/2022 Season that features five red hot musical blockbusters as kindling: the Florida premieres of recent Broadway hits Once on This Island and Head Over Heels, Broadway fan favorites Kinky Boots and Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical, and Songs for a New World from one of Broadway's hitmakers. The season is presented by American National Bank, South Florida's premier community bank.
Slow Burn Theatre Company celebrated its 10th Anniversary with a donor reception hosted by American National Bank. This night of philanthropy and fun resulted in more than $50,000 in pledges from loyal supporters and other arts enthusiasts.
Indecent, a haunting drama about a Jewish theatre troupe and its devotion to a controversial play, and Memphis, an exuberant musical about the racial divide in early days of rock and roll, took their respective places in South Florida theatrical history as Best Play and Best Musical on Monday, April 8, when the winners of the 43rd annual Carbonell Awards were announced. The ceremony was held at Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.
As the South Florida theater community prepares for the 43rd annual Carbonell Awards, this year's three talented scholarship winners, dubbed Carbonell Scholars, have been announced. In addition to recognizing special achievement in the arts and excellence in regional theater, the Carbonell Awards has, since its inception, awarded scholarships to high school seniors pursuing degrees in the performing arts and journalism.
A drama about an acting troupe performing a controversial play and a world premiere musical about life in Cuba past and present garnered the most nominations for the 43rd annual Carbonell Awards, which honor excellence in theater in South Florida. Indecent, produced by Palm Beach Dramaworks in West Palm Beach, earned nine nominations, and Havana Music Hall, produced by Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre in Coral Gables, earned seven.
