Travel to New York City with the Des Moines Community Playhouse, May 2-5, 2019, or May 9-12, 2019, to see the new Broadway shows Tootsie and To Kill a Mockingbird. Registrations for the Playhouse's Best of Broadway tours and a $125 per person non-refundable deposit are now being accepted. Register online at dmplayhouse.com. Total trip cost is $2249 per person, double occupancy. Space is limited, and trips sell out quickly.

The Playhouse's Best of Broadway tours allow travelers to see newly opening Broadway shows. The packages include round-trip non-stop coach airfare on Delta Airlines from Des Moines to New York City, three nights at the Renaissance Times Square in the heart of the theatre district, and three theatre tickets. Travelers enjoy a relaxing, educational travel experience led by Playhouse artistic director John Viars and executive director David Kilpatrick. Their unique knowledge and theatre expertise create an unforgettable theatre tour.

The group will see Tootsie, an exciting new musical based on the Dustin Hoffman/Jessica Lange film. Michael Dorsey (Santino Fontana, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella) is a talented but difficult actor. He struggles to find work until an audacious stunt borne out of desperation lands him the role of a lifetime. The show features music by David Yazbek, the 2018 Tony Award-winning composer and lyricist of The Band's Visit.

The group will also see To Kill a Mockingbird, adapted by Aaron Sorkin (West Wing) and starring Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom, The Purple Rose of Cairo). The play is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Harper Lee. The story takes place in Maycomb, AL, in the throes of the Great Depression and explores prejudice, compassion, and the courage to do what's right. The book was recently named the country's favorite in PBS' Great American Read.

Best of Broadway tours leave on a Thursday morning and provide plenty of time to explore and shop before returning on a Sunday evening. New York veterans come and go as they please while first-timers can opt for a variety of group tours. A selection of dining and sightseeing options, such as a welcome dinner, a scenic and informative Gray Line Bus Tour, and a serene and breathtaking New York harbor cruise are offered, each for an additional fee. Optional travel insurance is provided by Allied Travel.

The Playhouse, now celebrating its 100th season, is one of the oldest and largest community theatres in the US. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
