BWW Previews: THE CHILDREN'S HOUR at PHOENIX REPERTORY THEATRE GROUP

Phoenix Repertory Theatre Company's debut season continues with Lillian Hellman's rarely produced play "The Children's Hour," directed by Long Island theatre veteran Daniel Bubbeo and featuring a cast of local actors.

The 1934 play, with an updated script setting the production in the early 1950s, tells the story of two school teachers, Karen and Martha, who run a girls boarding school in New England. Scandal unfolds when a malicious student tells a lie that implicates a homosexual relationship between the two teachers. The lie spreads and wreaks havoc on the lives of Karen, Martha and their loved ones.

The play, banned in Boston and London despite its financially and critically successful Broadway run, explores a moral melodrama that remains historically and thematically provocative.

"The events it displays could still happen now, that deceit and misguided righteousness are alive and well in this country," said Variety of the play.

"This play is in alignment with our goal to produce shows that actors and directors have been dying to do, but aren't often produced," said Paul Lichtman, President of Phoenix's Board of Directors.

The theatre will continue their season with "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" in October and "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" in November. Phoenix's complete season is available at phoenixrepertorytheatre.com
