Job Summary



The Production Technician is a member of the College Theater team at the OFA. The position coordinates and supports the following activities including management, design, construction. material procurement for all aspects of theater and event programming.

Job-Specific Responsibilities



Works directly and collaboratively with respective supervisor, students, guest artists and faculty.

Coordinates workflow for technicians, students, casuals, part time employees, and outside service providers.

Maintains shop and stage equipment and tools necessary to perform job.

Trains others in design techniques in all theater disciplines; lighting, sound, projection, scenic and scenery construction as well as front of house management.

Maintains accurate documentation of each production.

May monitor expenses within an established budget.

May assist in hiring OFA staff.

May consult on productions outside of OFA.

Maintains and repairs equipment, making purchases when required and in consultation with Technical Director.

Promote and maintain a safe and enriching environment in which to practice art making.

Review plans and schedules from student production teams; coordinating events held in Elizabeth Cary (EC) Agassiz House and Theater; reviewing scenic, lighting and rigging in Agassiz Theater with emphasis given to safety and ability to realize designs within budget and timeline.

Supervising load-in, strikes and technical rehearsal of all productions in the EC Agassiz Theater.

Coordinating with all constituencies of Elizabeth Cary Agassiz House, including but not limited to:Radcliffe Institute Personnel, Faculty of Arts & Sciences Personnel and University Admissions.

Maintain stock supplies in shop facilities.

Manage safe use of all OFA-managed spaces and equipment in EC Agassiz House including stage, auditorium, lighting positions, construction shop, costume shop, laundry room, dressing rooms and Horner Room.

Adhere to OSHA and Harvard University safety guidelines where applicable.

Required to wear personal protective equipment and clothing when appropriate.

Assure presentations in EC Agassiz Theater comply with University’s building and safety policies, ADA and Title IX requirements.

Under the direction of the Technical Director, perform routine maintenance on theatrical equipment.

Coordinate & attend student production meetings. Attends OFA Theater staff meetings, and other OFA and College meetings as called upon.

Fields requests for use of EC Agassiz Theater, consulting as necessary, with Harvard College Admissions Office, Radcliffe Facilities, the Manager of College Theater and Senior Management in Office for the Arts.

Coordinates day to day scheduled use of the theater between Admissions and OFA programming, and some special Radcliffe programming.

Under Direction of Technical Director, hires and supervises student Technical Assistants.

May be directed to assist with projects and productions in other College venues.

As directed, providing support to the students, staff and faculty of the Theater, Dance and Media concentration.







Basic Qualifications



2+ years of technical theater experience





Additional Qualifications and Skills



BA/BFA preferred or equivalent work experience and training in lieu of degree.

2-6 years experience in a theater setting.

Proficient or Advanced knowledge of production management, costume and scenic construction, rigging (fixed grids, counter weight and automated,) sound / lighting / projections and related connectivity required. Networking and wireless experience a plus.

Proficiency required in Macintosh Systems and Microsoft Office products.

Experience with ETC lighting systems; ETC Ion software and networking, Yamaha consoles, Dante software, Qlab, Isadora and CAD Software, specifically Vectorworks.

Willingness to work flexible and extended hours, including weekends in a rigorous work environment.

Ability to lift 50lbs and walk or stand for extended periods of time and work at heights – from ladders, scaffolding and lifts.

A high degree of professionalism and the ability to work independently as well as effectively with others is required in this position.

Must be detail oriented and have a good safety record, and the ability to take and follow direction intelligently. Must be able to handle multiple tasks and prioritize one’s own work.

Ongoing willingness to acquire new skills and utilize technology to streamline processes and problem solve is essential.

Strong references relating to good interpersonal and problem-solving skills will also be required.

Must have or be able to obtain a valid Massachusetts driver’s license.

Successful candidate will be comfortable working with and supporting innovative student production teams in a non-curricular environment with varying skill levels. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and with a variety of projects, vendors, and constituencies in a university environment. Demonstrated ability to work independently and without immediate supervision.
