Clinical Assistant or Associate Professor/Production Supervisor--PAPD - Pace University

Position Overview:

The Pace School of Performing Arts (PPA) is seeking a full-time Assistant or Associate Clinical Professor to teach stage craft courses (independently or collaboratively) and maintain a high level of support for the artistic production and academic goals of PPA and the University, including mentoring students and providing an educationally sound, safe, and satisfying experience for all theater participants.



This clinical faculty position is a combination of faculty and administration. 12 credits will be devoted to teaching, and departmental service is expected as part of the faculty assignment. The position also will receive 12 credits of administrative release to oversee all technical (design and production) aspects of the PPA mainstage productions and student events and productions, integrating all scenery, lighting, and sound elements, while maintaining the theatrical facilities and scenic and paint shops. The clinical faculty member collaborates with the scenic and prop designers, and supervises, coordinates, and manages the builds, alterations, and purchases necessary for each production. They maintain accurate technical drawings, specifications, and equipment/inventory lists for all theatrical facilities, and produce necessary technical drawings and/or models for scenic construction. They assist in preparing, planning, budgeting, drafting, and purchasing materials for the mainstage productions, developing and maintaining the build schedule, production calendar; they purchase necessary supplies and track student and technical staff hours. They coordinate with the university’s Environmental Health and Safety and Facilities departments for the safe upkeep of PPA theatrical facilities. Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director of PPA.



Position Responsibilities:

The position recruits, hires, and supervises student labor and other technical staff as needed. They supervise and mentor the student labor, creating a tiered skill system, training them to become mentors to each other. When hiring additional technical staff, the clinical faculty member works with them to become supervisors of the student labor, monitoring their work. They oversee load-ins, technical rehearsals, and strike, and work closely with faculty and students to provide insight and help educate the students on all aspects of scenic and prop construction.



The ideal candidates will possess the following:

• MFA and 2-3 years of experience in theater production and teaching experience in a liberal arts setting are preferred, but BA/BFA and five years of experience may be considered.

• Desired theater experience: set and prop construction, lighting, sound, rigging, welding, and digital media and CAD drafting. Lighting and sound experience is a plus.

• Other experience: supervising students in a work environment; strong organizational, interpersonal, supervisory, and leadership skills; clear oral and written communication skills.

• Valid NY Driver’s License is required.

• Ability to drive a 14’ box truck and cargo van is preferred.

• Must be able to lift 50 pounds, climb up and down ladders, be knowledgeable of all scene shop hand and power tools, and be able to work on their feet for extended periods of time.
