Texas Native Jennifer Haley Returns To Alley Theatre With SUSTAINABLE LIVING

The Alley Theatre continues its Alley All New Reading Series with Sustainable Living by Jennifer Haley. The reading event follows the 2019 Alley All New Festival and Jennifer joins recent Reading Series playwrights including Eleanor Burgess (Wife of a Salesman), Ashley Austin Morris (The End of There) and Nick Vaughan and Jake Margolin (A Landing on the Bayou). Sustainable Living, directed by Leslie Swackhamer (Alley's upcoming Constellations), is Monday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Alley's Hubbard Theatre. Advance reservations are recommended and can be made at alleytheatre.org or by calling the Box Office at 713-220-5700. The reading is free and open to the public and will be followed by a post-show discussion.

In this new play from the author of The Nether, Emily and Darren enjoy a creative and well-meaning life; he's a celebrated architect, designer of their breathtaking green home in the hills of Los Angeles, and she's an urban planner launching an eco-charity on the other side of the world. But when his future projects collapse in the wake of devastating fires, they suddenly find themselves in survival mode and must call upon a host of potential saviors: a long-time adversary, a reality television producer, an ancient creature unearthed in the backyard... Will they find a way to live sustainably, or is the beast already at their door?

The cast includes Alley Resident Acting Company members Chris Hutchison (Quack, The Nether) and Todd Waite (Twelfth Night, Holmes and Watson). Justin Doran (Cinched and Strapped reading, The Lieutenant of Inishmore), Susan Koozin (Whistlin' Dixie reading, Stages Repertory: Always...Patsy Cline) and Julia Krohn (Quack, Freaky Friday) round out the cast.

A Texas native, Haley is a playwright whose work delves into ethics in virtual reality and the impact of technology on our human relationships, identity, and desire. She won the 2012 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for her play The Nether which the Alley produced in 2015 and premiered with Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles. The play has been produced off-Broadway, on London's West End, across the US and internationally. Other plays include Neighborhood 3: Requisition of Doom, a horror story about suburban video game addiction, and Froggy, a noir thriller with interactive media. Jennifer has worked with The Royal Court Theatre, Headlong, MCC, Sonia Friedman Productions, Woolly Mammoth, the Humana Festival of New Plays, The Banff Centre, Sundance Theatre Lab, O'Neill National Playwrights Conference, Lark Play Development Center, PlayPenn, and Page 73. For television, she has written on Netflix's Hemlock Grove and Mindhunter. Haley is a member of New Dramatists in New York City and lives in Los Angeles, where she founded the Playwrights Union.
