SEEKING
Equity actors for various roles. There are 3 AEA contracts to be cast among the available roles.
Theater Emory casts mainly from the Atlanta / North Georgia area.
Local Atlanta-area performers are encouraged to audition.

PREPARATION
Actors will read sides from the script to be provided at the audition and available at the theater and online in advance.
Actors auditioning for certain roles will be asked to sing their own improvised melody using lyrics provided in the sides.
This play features some incidental, unaccompanied music. It is not a musical.
Please bring a picture and a resume, stapled together.

Project Description
Set in an asylum for the criminally insane of a dystopic future, Zoohouse is a twisted tale about who has narrative authority, where we keep history, and whose lives matter. Destined for an explosive conclusion, the inmates of Zoohouse find themselves on a dark and surreal ride fueled by the psychological, sexual, political and social topics that permeate our everyday lives.
This script development workshop will culminate in a staged reading presentation. The workshop is a co-production between Theater Emory and the National Black Theater.
Character Breakdown/Descriptions
Not unlike Marat/Sade – the staff and inmates of the asylum participate in a play within the play. The characters of Turner and Kris remain consistent, but all others take on various roles in what the Director terms an “artistic project”. Integral to the storytelling is a kind of Greek Chorus of inmates acting as Slaves/Singers. Musicality and ability to improv is necessary for all roles.
DIRECTOR / ABRAHAM LINCOLN – male, 40 years old, White. He desperately tries to maintain control of the inmates, but his power is slipping.
NURSE / HERALD – female, 40 year old Black nurse, she is exacting and does things by the book.
TURNER – male, 30-year-old former Black soldier. He seems displaced in time. Has PTSD.
KRIS – male, 30s, non-White. Gil Scott Heron meets old school hip-hop sensibilities. He is ready to lead the Revolution.
* PEACHES / NEFERTITI / SLAVE CHORUS – female, 20s, black. A strong singer.
* SLAVE CHORUS / PATIENT #1 – male, 20s, Black.
* SLAVE CHORUS / PATIENT #2 – male, 20s, non-White.
* SLAVE CHORUS / SINGER #1 – gender neutral, 20s, non-White.
* SLAVE CHORUS / SINGER #2 – gender neutral, 20s, non-White.
* Some improvisational singing to lyrics provided by the playwright.
