Ruth Younger - 30s, African-American. Walter’s wife and Travis’ mother. Ruth takes care of the Younger home.
Travis Younger - 10-11, African-American. Walter and Ruth’s son. Travis is energetic and curious.
Joseph Asagai - 20s. A Nigerian student who has been dating Beneatha and is falling for her. This role will potentially double with another.
George Murchison - 20s, African-American. George is also dating Beneatha. A young man of privilege. This role will potentially double with another.
Bobo - 30s, African-American. Bobo is an acquaintance of Walter Lee’s and partner in a plan to start a business together.
Karl Lindner - 30s, white. A representative of the Clybourne Park Improvement Association.
Mrs. Johnson - 40s, African-American. The Youngers’ neighbor.

Lena Younger - 50s/60s, African-American. The matriarch of the family.
Walter Lee Younger - 30s, African-American. Lena Younger’s son. He is a chauffeur.
Beneatha Younger - 20, African-American. Lena’s daughter and Walter’s younger sister. 20 years old and a college student, Beneatha wants to become a doctor.

Bill - 70s-80s, any ethnicity. Nancy’s husband and father of Ben and Bill. Bill has been a steady, solid father and husband for fifty years. Now, he is exploring parts of himself that are surprising even to him -- including a flirty, romantic side and a yen for performing stand-up comedy.
Ben - 30s-40s, any ethnicity. Nancy and Bill’s older son and Jess’ husband. A lawyer who is quite tethered to his work. He is flummoxed by his parents’ later-in-life disruption of their status quo.
Jess - 20s-30s; any ethnicity. Ben’s wife, a certified family therapist, and visibly pregnant. She cares deeply about her in-laws’ potential for harmony and self-expression.
Tommy - 20s-30s, any ethnicity. Tommy meets Brian via a hook-up app. He is friendly, flirty, and insightful about Brian’s parents’ marital situation.
Carla - 60s-70s, any ethnicity. Carla is becoming a romantic interest for Bill. She’s from the Midwest and cheerful. Salt of the earth, friendly, a talker. She may have a slight tic.

Nancy - 70s-80s, any ethnicity. Nancy is contemplating making a big change in her life and becoming a truer version of herself.
Brian - 30s-40s, any ethnicity. Nancy and Bill’s younger son, Brian is a passionate and dedicated drama teacher.

Oswald Alving - 20s, any ethnicity. Mrs. Alving’s son, a painter who has just returned from living abroad in Paris. Passionate, complicated, ill, enamored with Regina.
Pastor Manders - 40s-60s, any ethnicity. A highly intelligent pastor from a nearby town and an old friend of Mrs. Alving and her late husband. He appears to be an upstanding and moral member of the community, but has a romantic history with Mrs. Alving that he tries to repress.
Jacob Engstrand - 40s-50s, any ethnicity. A carpenter and the purported father of Regina. He is a wily businessman who dreams of opening a bar-type establishment for sailors. Funny and always on the make.
Regina Engstrand - early 20s, any ethnicity. Mrs. Alving’s maid and purported daughter of Jacob Engstrand, she is enamored with Oswald and desperate for a way out of her present circumstances.

Mrs. Helene Alving - 40s/50s, any ethnicity. As her grown son returns home from Paris, Mrs. Alving, a widow, is questioning her own sense of self and morality.

A HUMAN BEING, OF A SORT

AVAILABLE ROLES:
Ota Benga - 20s, a Congolese man of small stature, sometimes called a pygmy. He is featured in an exhibit at the Bronx Zoological Park, which sparks the public to protest and sparks him to fight for his freedom. Smart, mercurial, possesses the physical prowess of an expert hunter.
Smokey - 50s, African-American. Smokey is a prisoner who has agreed to be a zookeeper, and is charged with looking after Ota Benga, in exchange for early release. He resists getting involved in the controversy around Ota, but is ultimately forced to examine his own moral and ethical positions. Wry and rough, he has a bit of a smoking habit.
William Temple Hornaday - 50s, white. Hornaday runs the Bronx Zoological Park and is a leading figure in the scientific community. He is a savvy manager and skilled negotiator.
Reverend George Sims - 30s-50s, African-American. Sims is a street preacher petitioning the zoo for Ota’s release; he secretly wishes he were leading the charge, not Gordon. He is street smart and a bit more colloquial than the others.
Reverend William Slater - 20s-30s, African-American. Slater is a reverend petitioning the zoo for Ota’s release. He is open-minded and modern in his thinking, relative to Reverend Gordon.
Samuel Phillips Verner - 20s-40s, white. Verner is an explorer charged with going into the Congolese countryside to find people to bring back to America, potentially for the purpose of being featured in exhibits. A southern gentleman with an adventurous streak, he is cunning and charismatic.
Jumbo - Any age, any ethnicity. Doubles with another role in the play. A spectral elephant who appears in a dream, he is simultaneously braggadocious and foreboding.
UNAVAILABLE ROLES:
Reverend James Gordon - 40s-60s, African-American. Gordon is a nationally renowned orator and is the leader of a group of reverends who are petitioning the zoo for Ota’s release. He is deeply religious and quite proud. He is more traditional than Reverends Sims and Slater.

Leyla - late 20s, Afghan. Afiya’s neighbor and childhood friend, she has a baby at home. She drops by Afiya and Jawid’s home unannounced and does not seem to take their cues to get her to leave. She is flighty, something of a gossip, and a terrible liar.

Taroon - early 30s, Afghan. A man who worked as an interpreter for the US Army.
Afiya - early 30s, Afghan. Taroon’s sister, a seamstress.
Jawid - late 30s, Afghan. Afiya’s husband, a tailor.

Sol - Mid 60s, white. A recently retired HR manager, Nate’s father. Due to a perceived rise in crime in his neighborhood, he has purchased a gun. He is struggling to get his family to understand his reasoning.

Alisa - Early-mid 30s, any ethnicity. An advertising account manager, Nate’s wife.
Nate - Mid-late 30s, white. A stay-at-home dad and aspiring photographer, Alisa’s husband.
Diana - 59, white. A middle school math teacher, Nate’s mother.

Gail - 60s, any ethnicity. 17 years sober. Gail oversees the set-up for her group’s daily, early morning meetings. She enjoys the company and friendship of Nicole, even as she yearns for reconciliation with her daughter Angela.
Nicole - Late 20s/early 30s, any ethnicity. 11 months sober, 18 weeks pregnant. Nicole has a complicated personal life and depends on the routine of her early morning group and the counsel and friendship of Gail.
Tim - Early 20s, any ethnicity. Very newly sober, currently between jobs. Tim is trying to find his footing in the group and in this new chapter of his life.
Angela - Late 30s, any ethnicity. Gail's daughter. She has had minimal contact with her mom in the last 11 years. She has a deep well of complicated feelings about her mother.
UNAVAILABLE ROLES:
Ron - 40s, any ethnicity. 12 years sober, gay. Ron occasionally tangles with Gail, and sometimes vents to the group.
